bzphotog
Hey is the glass thick enough on an AGA 15 gallon tank to remove the top and bottom rims or just the top or none at all. I read somewhere that the 15 is thicker than the 10 and people have removed it on those. please share your wisdom. thanks bzphotog Link to comment
CL_
It might work. I have done it on a 10, but a 15 is 4 inches longer. Link to comment
Reefer Al
Yay! You're finally doing it!! If the glass is the same thickness as the ten, I wouldn't do it, but if it's the next thickness up, I would feel totally confident. Link to comment
CL_
I think that the glass is 1/4 inch like a 20 gallon. Go for it! Link to comment
bzphotog
lol you guys are way to inconfident on the glass thickness of the 15 for my hardwood floors and neighbours. Im not doing it just yet hopefully for the summer, i like to get well ahead of myself as I DIY like crazy so I do research well in advance perhaps too far to the point the hype about the project dies. Im still workin on my pc pendant. Did all the hard stuff today just glueing now. so soon. Link to comment

Chebon
IIRC I read somewhere that the 15 and up have thicker glass. AGA/Aqueon site doesn't say... Link to comment

amnesiak
Don't know when I'll order mine, but I'm doing a 15 AGA with a 10g resumpium. When I do get the 15, I'll try to measure the glass. I'm also planning on a glass-holes.com overflow setup. BTW, my local petco can get mine for me for $35 on a couple of days notice. What have you found? I've found them to be more expensive than that online, not including shipping. Link to comment
ribbie
Does the rim really influence structural integrity that much? I had a 15 g rimless built for me, but I'm still curious. I think rimless just looks so sexy and serene. Link to comment
bzphotog
mrpets.ca has them for $29 but instore only no shipping. Link to comment

I think rimless just looks so sexy and serene. It's not really supposed to, but it's one of those things - on a tank designed with a rim, do you really want to mess around with it that much? Because disaster is disaster. From what I've read, it should be OK. I might try it. Link to comment
davey
Just to keep you updated, so far so good, it held water for two days in the garage. Link to comment
amnesiak
Is there any bowing? How hard was it to get off? Inquiring minds with like projects want to know. Link to comment
Aleks
I want to do this to my 15 gallon aswell, just the top rim though......My glass is 3/16" thick, so I'd be curious how thick yours is....I never measured the glass on my 10 gallon though as a comparo.....Can you measure yours and let me know? hcsceo
I've got a 15 I just finished. Yes the glass is 3/16. I really wanted to take the rim off mine and finally decided not to. My main reasons were that I couldn't afford for the tank to break in my office, and secondly I couldn't find anyone that had done it and didn't want to be the guinea pig. I've seen several 10's with it done and they make me nervous in the long run. If Davey can use a straight edge and measure the bow on the front plane that would be very helpful. I love rimless tanks but I really don't like water on the floor. No matter what anyone says that rim is there for a reason. If you check the specs on rimless 15 tanks you will find the glass thickness is more than 3/16. This was another deciding factor for me. Link to comment

I hear what you're saying....I just measured the glass on my 10g and its ~1/2 the thickness, under 1/8" thickness.....Thats thin.....Sooooooo, I'm thinking it would work well....I remember I had a broken 45g before aswell that I tried to "manually disassemble" with a pretty reasonable amount of difficulty.....Would love to hear from the OP though Link to comment
davey
I forgot about this thread. I will try and measure the amount of bowing when I get home tonight. Edit: The glass is bowing less than 1/16th of an inch. I would say about 1/32" at the center, so each side is bowing out 1/64".
