Brittle Starfish

Class: Ophiuroidea

These starfish are commonly referred to as brittle or serpent stars, usually depending on their appearance. The ones with the spiny arms tend to be referred to as brittle, while the smooth armed stars are referred to as serpent. There really is no scientific distinction made between them, they are all brittle stars. Most small species are reef safe scavengers and valuable additions to the reef tank, however, the larger serpent; more (specifically the green) and the larger bristles will sometimes go after smaller fish and ornamental shrimp.
