Aloha,

So I have been a member on here for quite sometime. I have gained so much info on here, it's were I gained my roots. Started with a 30g Biocube, moved to a 75g then finally to my 180g which was my pride and joy and would be happy to post pictures of that if people wanted me to. After dental school i decided to do a Pediatric Dental residency and where better to do one then in Hawaii. After diving here every weekend for a couple of months I decided to do a small tank here. So I went and picked up a Fluval 5g spec. Cool little tank, but needed to do some mods to it to get it to my liking. Here in hawaii you are not allowed to have SPS or LPS corals, but zoathids are plentiful and i quickly realized I could collect some amazing varieties. Going to keep this tank purely hawaiian.

Tank has be modified by removing back filtration and placing carbon and phosloc increased flow by adding a 240gph hydor circulation pump. Lighting was an issue so I picked up a 18inch zoomed LED fixture with 8 10000k 1w and 4 456k actinic 1w. I really love the look of the LED's, never used them before most of my experience is with metal halides.

Going to add more biological filtration to the back in the form of live rock and marine algae.

Current stock

10lbs give or take of live rock

some hawaiian zoas (collected per hawaii rules 5 polyps per colony) about 5 variants collected so far.

1 small four lined wrasse collected in a tide pool

That's about all I have got so far. I think the tank will come out great and pictures to come. I have done many reef tanks and have had great success, but have never done such a small tank so any advice would be appreciated. I'm used to having huge protein skimmers, ATO's, and calcium reactors so if you have any tips to make my life easier send them my way MAHALO!

I totally agree man. I am on oahu now, just moved from maui. I have noticed a huge difference in the condition of the reef on each island.

Thanks customAquariumBx i think the tank has started out nicely, it's still in it's infancy. Here in hawaii you can't collect sps or lps corals. Also since they try to keep only native species on there reefs the import of sps and lps is not allowed. So you are pretty much limited to zoa's, the leathers they have here, anemones, and the different types of marine plants. Not to big of deal when god's aquarium is just down the road to see sps and lps.

Well I have lived on Maui since june, just moved to oahu about three weeks ago. I have also dove Big Island. In my opinion Maui was just a healthier reef. Most any where you go on the south or west shores right off the beach was amazing diving and the reef was in very good condition. Same goes for Big Island. Here on Oahu I have noticed that the reef is further off from the beach in some areas, less reef in general. I saw people just standing on coral heads the other day, there is some really good diving on oahu too, you just have to know where to go and it really helps to have a boat, where Maui and Big Island i could just walk into the water. Then again I haven't been here long so we will see. The west coast of Oahu is pretty good just a haul out there.

I went to maui a few yrs ago, we found this one secluded beach near the beach with 100ft waves, clear sky, flat water, awesome reefs.

I'd give anything to go back....
