SaNChEz's New (USED) Nano 24

So I ventured out and bought a used NanoCube 24 HQI. It has a 150w HQI that looks similar to the Current Satellites. It also has 12 Moonlight LEDs which are all kinds of messed up, and I didn't get the power plugs for them from the guy so right now they're out of commission.

The tank came stocked with about 25 lbs of live rock, unknown amount of live sand, which is horrible. It's white on top, then there's a layer of brown/green (what should I do about that, run some kind of filter for 2 days while I toss the sand around to get rid of the sludge) or is that just sediment part of the sand. The whole tank (was) is covered with GHA, and I found a few bubble algae pods around as well, which I removed.

I'll get some pics tomorrow after I replace all the chemipure, get rid of the bioballs and the crushed LR that the guy threw into chamber 2. I dunno if there's a media basket in there, can't really tell with the amount of live rock in the chamber.

Overall this tank is a project, heck I got it for free.. (Traded a computer that I got for free).

As of now, there's a 1x1 patch of pulsing Xenia, a green shroom, red shroom, GSP, a colt that's pretty nice looking, some kind of anemone and some random button polyps.

On top of that, there's a tomato clown, a regular clown and a blue damsel (which I will be bringing to my LFS tomorrow, do not want. There's 2 gigantic brittle stars, one is the standard issue one, and one has black bands on it's legs. There's a few small brittles, and an army of hermits. No snails though.

Along with the pump that's in chamber 1, which I think is the stock one maybe? There's also an additional Rio 600 in the display that I can't figure out where to put.

Any advice on what I should get for the remainder of the CUC? I'm thinking an Emerald to combat the bubble algae and snails to help in cleaning the glass (which is atrocious) and maybe a sand sifting star. What can I do about the GHA besides light starve it?

The good thing, no sign of Cyano!! Woooo!! I'll post some pictures before and after I clean the glass. The Mag Float isn't doing anything, gunna have to take a razorblade to that bad boy.

The Tomato Clown likes to get down and dirty with the anem:

So, $100, 15 gallons of new salt water, 30lbs of live sand, blood, sweat, tears and some testing equipment later... The tank is now up and running in it's new state. As promised, here's some pics of the new and improved setup.

Please excuse the rockwork it's just like that until I can actually see in the tank.

And for some reason, this clown is super super in love.

Video of Clown loving his house.

So there's this anemone that came with my tank, dunno what it is... some kind of bubble tip. One of the clowns hosts it hardcore, as you can see from the video. Last night it decided to move around like 4 times. Once it finds a spot will it remain there, or will it constantly be moving? I really don't want to put corals in there and have the anemone walk up and sting them.

Could I get rid of the anemone and get a torch or something more stationary for the clown to host? There's 2 clowns in there, a tomato and a standard, the tomato is constantly in that anem, and the other clown is just swimming aimlessly around the tank. I feel kind of bad for it. If I get 2 torches or a torch and frogspawn etc. will they both live happily in their respective corals?

The anemone should settle and the clown will likely relocate. As long as you dont change the water flow, the anemone will likely find a place it likes and plop itself down. It could get bored and take a walk-about later as some prefer to be nomadic, but most find a good spot and stay.

I would seriously think about redoing your rock scape so that there are no rocks within 1.5" of the sides or front of the tank. Rocks within 1.5" (even at the base of the sand/glass) will prevent you from getting those areas with a mag-float, and you'll likely get algae build-up and it'll start becoming unsightly.

The clowns will host in whatever they feel like, I have a few frogspawn and my clowns will sometimes hang out in there, or sometimes in my duncans or toadstool. If you want them hosting, the maroon seems to really like that nem, so I would just watch it and let it be fore now.

Cool, thanks for all the info. All the rocks were lying around on the bottom just because I couldn't see anything in order to stack them properly :P

I'm uploading a FTS as I type. The nem rock is in the middle of the tank right now and I'm hoping he'll relocate so I can move the rock he's on back up to the top where it belongs, there's a big chunk of the aquascape missing because if his antics!! As you can see, the coraline encrusted rock that's dead center belongs in the top right where there's a big chunk missing. I'm hoping the nem will jump off that and find a nice crevice on the right side somewhere. I've got a Colt, some Xenia and GSP on the left so over there would not be preferred lol.

This is what the aquascape looked like before the nem decided to jump onto the top right:

This is what it looks like now, trying to coax the anem into getting off of that rock:

I have a bunch more shots that I will upload tomorrow at work, also I got 2 nano-mags when I ordered one for my pico, so I'm using that for now. Nice and slim :)

Took some more shots tonight, some of the tank, some of the corals, some of the GHA that I'm still trying to get rid of. But hey, it looks a hell of a lot better than it did when I got it :) I've got an army of hermits and I take the toothbrush to what I can, hopefully it will be gone soon.

So I sat down and took some pics today, there's been a fish exchange since the last post. I got rid of the Tomato Clown and replaced it with a True Perc. Her and my juvenile False are getting along very well. I've also got some new acans, which I haven't snapped yet, so maybe next time. The anemone is still firmly in place on the rock in the center of the tank, but hopefully he'll move soon. It's in the middle of splitting, or so it seems so I doubt he will move any time soon.

Anyway...

And a FTS from yesterday, when the Tomato was still there...:

I also picked up 2 peppermint shrimp to help with the aiptasia problem, so hopefully in a few days they'll all be gone.

Your reef looks really nice. Why did you get rid of the tomato? I bet lester really misses him/her.

Thanks :) And the reason I got rid of the tomato clown is simply because I'm a sucker and my girlfriend wouldn't let me get rid of "Nemo" (of course it's called nemo) who was being picked on by the tomato.

So now we have Nemo (false) and Marty (true) and they both hate the nem equally lol.

So I promised some pics, and I will take them tonight. Got the ricordia garden up and running and also added some blue xenia, acans, misc. zoas, more green buttons and a frogspawn.

Woo!

I took some pics last night without my tripod like a doofus and none of them came out too hot, so I'll take some more tonight and have them uploaded in the early evening.

So, as promised... Here's some pics of the setup. Please bear with the blurryness as I took them with my phone (but they're still halfway decent)

Tank looks great. Btw my last name is sanchez too. Lol

Awesome :D

My clowns have taken a liking to the xenia bush recently and now it's hosting them... they're bizarre, first the powerhead, then the bottom right corner, now the xenia. They can't make up their minds :)

Updates!

Decided to get out my not-cellphone camera and take some recent pics. All of my FTS came out blurry minus a top-down shot, so I apologize for that.

Great tank. I like the statue head in the center, very different yet not too "pre-made" looking.

Thanks! It came with the tank when I got it off of Craigslist. I was going to ditch it initially but it had already been in there so long it felt a little silly to ditch an established piece.

The statue in the center is cool. I usually would laugh when people put fake plastic crap in their tanks but yours looks sweet. Aged and like it could actually be found on a reef! Great touch!

Nice pics. I had to get rid of a Tomato clown as well since he was such a mean bastard.

Thanks :) Yeah the tomato that came with this tank was rather jerkish.

And yeah, the Buddha head.. I'm upgrading to a 40BR with sump, can't decide if I want to keep it or not. The fish love to sleep inside it, but I think they can deal without it.
