actually, there's a study done that frags have a lower chance of survival and growth on a marble substrate than a concrete substrate.
if you would like a link to the paper, let me know and I can post it.

Wow, that's interesting. I havn't really noticed any difference in survival rate from glass to acrylic to marble or store bought frag plugs. I would love to see that link. It sounds like an interesting read for sure. Thanks.

Link to paper would be nice.
I wonder if it depends on the corals used. I know my GSP & briariums have no problem growing on frag tiles (and everything else).
Also, during a big blue clove polyps spawning,
http://forum.marinedepot.com/FindPost102040.aspx guy mentions that the larva seemed to prefer CA Reactor media over marble tiles (which he calls chips).

I am with you Daemonfly, I would be interested to know the specifics. There also seems to be a ton a variables that would determine if a coral survives or not regardless of what type of plug it is mounted on.

We just started transferring frags from frag plugs to marble rocks so I'm really interested in reading this paper, as well.

+1 and they are hard to pick up with the tongs if they are rounded at all, I ditched the glass instantly.

i got a sheet of the travertine (its tumbled travertine actually, and more specifically ts called chiaro) and i used hot water to remove th tiles from the glue (that was a real PITA >:( ) other than that i am loving my new frag plugs! they were cheap! they seem to be working just fine! and theyre readily available close by no shipping charges or waiting necessary!
props to the prop!

thanks for the tip prop!
and on the growth arguement i dont know i see new polyps popping up on some of these zoa frags already! and its been ~1week (but they are under a 250w mh and 80w actinic pc's

)
and as far as gluing goes these tiles work GREAT! imo they are great plugs!

If you have any issues, just ask their guy where the marble tiles are. They're usually in separately sold sheets (don't have to buy a box).

The glue comes off quite easily if you put a sanding wheel on a dremel tool. Also, I haven't noticed and hindrance to growth of zoanthids from these tiles.

I've been using them for several years and haven't noticed any problems with them whatsoever, to the point that I just started a tank with 4X4 tiles as the substrate! Check out my contest thread, link below.
Edit: They are not marble, despite their label on some types. They are not crystalline like marble, but are a relatively soft coralline rock, most likely calcite, no different than the stuff they use for aquacultured rock.

Hehe If it was legal I'd be selling flat rate boxes full of perfectly flat natural coral frag plugs a couple hundred feet away from the beach and water for cheap...
Maybe I should double check with DLNR....

Mew.... Actually why would you post something like this and not just include the link in the first place.
Useless...
