GoooooooooOOGIE!!! biggrin.gif
oogie
MUWHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I DID IT!
:

I know I know, its not perfectly circular but, bulkhead fits great and rubber ring seals it!

I can't believe I even had balls to try it with dremel!
adinsxq
I see 3 modifications so far... great start oogie smile.gif

Thanks for submitting your entry photo.
oogie
Thanks adin!

Here is shot with 3/4" bulkhead installed.

rickjg
WOW, I've never seen anyone cut glass with a dremel.
You learn something new every day around here!!!
Good Luck
crrichey
Lol, so whats the bulkhead for???
oogie
That bulkhead is for the drain to sump!
Kogut
lol. Wow. Great work cutting the glass! Not sure I'd be gutsy enough to try that one. wink.gif
crrichey
You have a sump on a Nanocube? Hey, I just realized something, for OPEN you could link 2 Nanocubes together and be right at 12 gallons! Heheheh, I don't know what the purpose of that would be!!!!! Muhahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought about that, but I came to the conclusion that I was too poor..

Well, for one, increased water volume. Always a plus when dealing with such a small tank. Another is I can have skimmer and have it out of sight so I can keep the streamlined look. Also, this way I can use external pumps so that it will keep the water cool. With MH i will be putting in the hood, every little bit helps temp wise.

It also gives me ability to add iceprobe in the sump.

I am sure there are more advantages but these are main reasons.
calvin
wow! nice start. can't wait to see what you're going to do with this
crrichey
Actually, I was refering to having the 2 tanks linked together, not the sump, I get that, just giving ya a hard time wink.gif
oogie
Here is shot of little SCWD plumbing done. Sorry for the dirty tank! Its understandable cause I have been mutilating it ever since I got it!

alexwbush
looks very nice, are you going to close up the original hole (where the stock flow shot out)? I love that closed loop! Looks very clean!!
Tigahboy
oogie. excellent work thus far! you really make me want to enter now. =P
oogie
Kogut, calvin: Thanks for the comments!

InuYasha: Oh, ok. stop giving hard time! LOL

alexwbush: Hmm didn't think about that hole. I guess I should right?

Tigahboy: I DARE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!tongue.gif
artarmon42

Ok. here is some pic of hood work in-progress.

When I recieved NC6, like everyone else in the "open" competition, I started gutting the hood. After its been absolutley stripped, I try to fit my 70W MH retro kit from aquabuys.com. I found out that reflector is little to thick for the hood.
So I was thiking if I should make my own reflector then I saw my old finnex 18W PC fixture in the corner of my closet. So I thought, what the hell, lets make more room in the hood rather then cram it with MH which in turn could give me heat issues. So this is what I did!

Here is shot of under the hood.

Now here is at current stage. I have applied some bondo automotive bodyfiller to smooth out the hood. Yes, it looks scary and all beat up but after sanding and painting I am sure it will look great!

I used same bondo method with front of my PC case which is actually made with similar material as NC6 hood.

Hope my NC6 hood will be as smooth and nice as this case came out!
phergus_25
damn cool computer case and its gonna be an impressive tank also
mushroom head
I think it will look great when finished.
The Empiricist
Whoa...! You're horrifying me (in a good way, of course) but at the same time giving me a major DIY bug the way you're tackling all this. Very inspiring! What manner of dremel bit did you cut that back with? I forget what it's called. And I trust you had to go really slow?
oogie
mushroom head: Thanks shroom! You are my pal!

The Empiricist: I will give you a website. It gives pretty good detailed how-to on glass cutting w/ dremel. Although I did it myself, I stoped very frequently to pour the water on the glass and dip the tip of dremel in the water to cool off! Here is the link.

alexwbush
the two holes are for fans, correct?

I love how this tank is coming along... how easy is it to work with bondo? I'd be worried about the repeatability factor of that mod. But I love the insanity!
oogie
alexwbush: Yes. They are for the 2 80mm pc fan. Bondo is not so hard to work with once you play around with it little bit. I am gonna paint it and seal it with clearcoat so tank water never touches the bondo. I will be wrapping the underside of the hood b4 I paint so tank water never touches the paint either!
Travis
Looks realy cool Oogie. I can't wait to see the finished hood smile.gif

Oogie: I've always been curious about putting in the aquabuys 70W retro kit into the NC6 hood. So as not to distract from this thread, can you please PM me with the problems you found?
Tigahboy
oh man. i never knew u were one of those [HARDCORE] computer case modders. ur gonna blow everyone out of the water. Glad I didn't enter now. haha.
embryoguy
this is insanity! smile.gif im very very impressed! great thread.

will the tank have a video monitor so you can send emails? hehe

absolutely amazing!
Pili4444
It would be cool if you built one of those reef keeping computers into the hood.

Tank looks great so far and that computer case is awsome also.
The Empiricist
Thanks so much for the link. Cripes, I just saw the makings of your inwall-bound tank as well. You rock!
billpa
Hey Oogie

That link you posted is from my reef club when we did a demo on drilling glass with a dremel. Very easy to do really as long as you are patient. Just curious if you are in the club or from the area...or you happened upon the link when you did a google search.

Either way...thanks for the props! Your NC6 is looking very very nice!

billpa
oogie
thanks everyone for kind words.

billpa: I am from northern NJ area. I found that link from google!

artamon42: Reflector from Aquabuys.com simply will not fit in the hood. Its to thick. so If you attach it, then you won't able to put plexi splash guard.

Thanks
oogie
Not much update so far.

It takes lots of sanding but didn't have lots of time to actually do it.

Here are some shots of the hood. Sorry for a blurry pic!

Curves are starting get smooth! I hope I can finish the hood soon.

Thanks
ashburn
damnit those teaser picture doesnt count! we want a full shot! smile.gif
dhoffroad
WOW !!! damn oogie that is gona be kick arse...
Maxvan1
Have a link to what bondo is?

Did you cut that sheet metal (for the case) your self? With what, plasma cutter?
oogie
ashburn: I will take full shot when its ready!

dhoffroad: Thanks for the comments

Maxvan: I used mostly dremel but the letters are cut with water-jet!
Bondo is a automotive body filler. They use that stuff when you have dents in your car.

I was at target today for my daughter's stuff, and I saw a letter size cutting board. It was cheap so I bought it and it fits pretty good on NC6. Now there is a slot for gripping which I don't like and since its curved in the front, board doesn't cover that very front part. I am not sure if i am going to use it but, I took a shot of it anyways.

tinyreef
looks like blood stains on the hood. ohmy.gif

what's the cutting board for? rock platform to limit pressure points? you don't want to use eggcrate?

you could also cut a piece of clear acrylic to match the bottom identically. seamless.
rickjg
Man you are the Jesse James of nano-reefin
Monster Garage meets nc6
gman0526
Awesome!!! You can always get another cutting board and Dremel the "patches" to cover the rest of the bottom. Only concern would be that it might not match evenly, but with a layer of sand/silicone and the craftmanship you've deployed so far... who knows? Keep up the good job.
MadTownMax
damn oogie - I didn't know you were so close wink.gif

I'm going to be picking up some schweet frags in a few weeks up in the Bronx if you're intersted - the guy has 100-200 corals to choose from biggrin.gif

Hey! schweet is my word! lol jk...
rickjg
Yea, I think “schweet” is a Zonie word.
I hear Zonies 'round here talking like that all summer long.
