wat's dat? ???

jk, we all should be running a q-tank imo.

unfortunately, i have to weigh the benefits and costs of having a quarantine tank versus the pain of manual castration by my wife (the said penalty for getting another motherbleeping tank). X)

things that make you go "hmmm?"

so the end-result is that i very rarely add anything new to my systems nowadays. and if i do i watch the newcomers for parasites for months (yes, they turn up that long afterwards) and pray to any diety that will listen. (crak-god? you there?)

Yeah, I can't really have another tank. All I have now is my 55FW Garden, My Nanocube Reef and my Micro Reef w/ Mantis ...
Razin Kane
got a 5 gal running in the garage with an AC mini and 2 lbs of LR. never used it though. it just runs in the garage.
LakerFan
I dip my fish in some Hydroplex... that's worked for me in the past.
AReeferIsExpensive
they are soeasy to set up, so i would never just "run" one...
but i have the equipment necessary ready if needed~
EtOH_is_good
i'm going to run one in the kitchen because I don't want those coral flatworms or any other nasties to get into the main tank.
skeletor
I usually do a FW dip for corals before they go into the tank. I've avoided flatworms twice doing this.

Wasn't quit sure what was meant by "maintained", setup and running or in storage...

Mine is in my closet and I just dump some display water in it and throw in an extra sponge I have sitting in my canister for the bio and it's good to go in under 30 minutes for emergencies.
Only one so far

They refer to them "acclimation" tanks down here in Florida. I assume that's what you mean by "quarantine"?

If so, I don't maintain one per se, but my LFS gave me a small clear plastic container that I keep on stand-by, that hangs on the side aquarium. They said one of their manufacturers gives them to them for free.

When I get something new to add to the tank, other than snails/crabs, I just hang that on the front and dump the whole bag in there. Then I run an airline tube with a valve on one end from the main tank and let the water slowly drip into the container. When it reaches a certain level, I syphon a little out and repeat this for about three or four hours, before adding the new resident.

So far, so good...

Oh yeah............
U never know--when some bleeping fish wants to do the high jump--when you got the hood lifted.
I actually have one running but--so far only used it once-- on a Discus that got a little freaked out-- when the front door of the house slammed shut. We where having 40 to 45 mph gusty trades that day.

Ahhhh, carpet surfing.... gotta hate that. Makes ya wonder where the heck they think they are going. They think the tank is bad, I wonder what they think about the carpet??
divemasterdave
no q-tank cuz I don't have any fish stock.
tinyreef
q-tanks are good for corals too. coralvores (is that a word?) can be plucked off before infesting the system, e.g. predatory inverts like nudibranches, snails, or crabs.
scoopsfolks
No, I don't currently maintain a quarantine tank because I am not currently adding to my tank. However, for the last major shipment of corals, I set up a 10-gallon quarantine tank and moved the corals into the main tank one at a time as I deemed them ready.
supernip
i use my lfs as a q-tank. I pay a deposit and tell them to watch it, they listen. nice folks
tinyreef
one of the signs of a good lfs imo.

Time for new poll. smile.gif
HumblePie
I have a spare tank but I don't keep it running due to space, etc. I know it is a lame excuse and I am asking for disaster but just don't have the room for all the equipmaintenance of another tank...

Shame on me...

it makes sense that people wouldn't have a QT on a 'nano-reef' site- I would assume most people partake in nanos do to a lack of space to have a bigger or multiple tanks- at least that's the case with me.
matt the fiddler
most people on here would have Q tanks larger than their nanos. HA HA HA
pyrrhus
thats a good idea matt, i think ill turn my new 90g tank into a Q for my 10g nano wink.gif
DitchPlains
Its mostly empty til I need ot use it for a QT, just some sand n rock, I will use flatworm exit, or Coral Dip by Seachem when I need to, including a freshwater dip, but I haven't purchased new corals in over 4 months, much to my gf's suprise, last purchase was n RBTA which is still on the mend.
kris_willard
Man if bob fenner ever found this site....
I have a 20 gal QT tank for my 90 gal and all fish go in there for 3-4weeks before entering the display. I feel they are essential to avoid total wipe out. Now as for nano's makes sence not to have one. I have a 5.5 gal in the works so i dunno if ill QT for the nano. Maybe im crazy (most people think so being i have a 90gal in my 6th floor apt).:
Levi
I catch most of my inhabitants from the gulf and they are notorious for having the itch, so I actually maintain two 10gal quarantine tanks, one for fish, crabs, and snails, and one for corals.
Gallaher
I run a 10 gal Q-tank, just keep a damsel in it to keep it from cycling. They really aren't that expensive to keep running if you go with a simple setup.
PetCrazy
Well, my 'nano-reef' is a 25 gallon tank, my quarantine tank is a 10 gallon.
I have tons of spare ten gallons in my house that I can set up whenever I feel like having any more quarantine tanks (or little projects) as well.
apophis924
a QT tank? if i had room and $$ for a QT tank i would just set up another nano tank. QT tanks IMO are a useless for me. all of my animals i have acclimated them in the main tank, all i do is wait for temp to equalize and just dump them in shipping water and all. have not lost one yet, i feel long term acclimation is more stressful then quick short ones, imagine easing yourself into a pool of cold water two inches at a time every 20 minutes, best to jump in and get it over with. Granted the shock is more intense and but the duration is very short. Animals are extemrely adaptable at short term extreme changes in their enviroments. It is the long slow changes that use up the animals adaptive resources and cuase its demise. This method has worked for mollusk, ecinoderms, cnidarians, decapods and fish. the small volume of water they are shipped wiht is much to small to destablize my tank water chemisrty and i onl;y run a 20H. Now your mileage and results may vary, this is what works for me. and with our tanks that is ALL that matters what works for US not what the text book says or Joe Blow expert says, since Joe Blow is not here managing my tank anyhow.

I have no time to start up a q-tank just because of the fact that every second im not testing my tank, im trying to find new ways to keep it cool...any sugestions. I'v tried ice in ziplock baggies and i have frozen water bottles and float them. is there any other way other then getting an air conditioner? (mine is on the way from TX)
apophis924
try this ice probe chiller works great for tanks up to 10 gallons, i think you can find it even cheaper if you do a search , Now there is one called a ice probe chiller, and all it is is the probe mounted inside an quacq clear 150 or mini. But it is cheaper to buy the probe alone , buy the aqua clear 150 and mount yourself. I never used the controller i just set my eahter and let the two fight it out, on a 20 which i used it on it didnt chill that much, but since i went from metal halide to vho i dont need that much chilling now a fan works great.

HOW LONG DO YOU DIP FOR? FOR LR TOO? OR JUST CORALS?

thanks
ghostbear29
my fish are QT at the LFS. They also have Hospital arrangements too. Pretty cool. considering im still a newbie. No QT for me
ReefMonkeee
how do you do FW dips?
organicman
that was my question aswell reefmonkeee
Imaexpat2
Absolutely!!!

To not do so is just asking for trouble in my opinion, cuase sooner or later your gonna get jammed in no uncertian terms.

My wake up call was with Pyrimid Snails in my not so nano 135 reef tank! Yeah I looked them over rather thoroughly before dropping them in. In fact I even took a tooth brush to them pretty good, But I obviously must have missed a couple becuase about a week later I was over ran and eventually had three less clams alive in my tank! Talk about "Multiples of Sadness"...

Now everything that goes in my tank - Fish, Corals, Clams gets QTed for 3 or 4 weeks wheather I suspect there is a problem or not. I have way too much invested in my tanks to take any unneccessary risk. In a reef tank, once its comprimised, your treatment options are somewhat limited. This is one instance when a ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure!

JMHO...
Scoot
take your fish and in good freshwater, dip it until the fish starts panicking, then take it out, but research more cause i dont want you to kill your fish
JGoslee
Yes I have a quarantine tank for all new fish. I won't add any new fish to my tanks unless they are in qt for a minimum of 6 weeks. I also have a small quarantine tank for corals.

Hey - the poll isn't working?
"Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/chris/public_html/forums/sources/action_public/topics.php on line 1499"

I know it is old, but would REALLY be interested in the results - if anyone has them could you please post them? Or fix the poll?

Thanks!!!
