In case I decide to try and make my own aquarium I ultamately would still love a rimless. Is glass cages glass rimless that bad of an aquarium. It's seems when I do google searches or browse this forum post from a year o so ago talk about their quality not being that good. It also seems like quite a few people on here have them. So what's the opinions of people that do have them?

I don't think there is really anything "wrong" with the tanks.... I don't own one but I've looked at few. The thing that got me mostly was the silicone work. It just seemed really sloppy and not what I would call very pro at all. I've built some tanks myself and KNOW that I do a better job with the silicone as far as nice neat clean seams. I'm just a DIY dude so I would think a company in business doing this should be at least a notch or two above that. I think there pricing is pretty fair and have not heard anything about seams giving out or leaking.... I know if I bought one I'd absolutely have to spend a little time with a razor blade and do some tidy work on it or else that is what I would be focusing on (sloppy seam) instead of what's inside.

I got my tank as a gift and my girlfriend can attest to their poor customer service. Eventually glass-cages was nice and shipped the tank out to our door when they cancelled their Raleigh date but it was not intensely proactive. The LFS here has ~6 250g+ rimless tanks from glass-cages that are pretty remarkable. The silicone on my tank isn't exactly remarkable and I probably could have done a better job but the glass is perfectly cut and finished and it doesn't leak or bow at all. The glass is .375" thick and it is a really good looking tank overall. No idea about the price though...as it was a gift.
Final say - I'd trust their tanks over my own if I was going bigger than 20 gallons or something funky...but try and find another source. I know there really aren't many others but just prepare to 'stay on their a**es' as my girlfriend just said...she seems to think it was worth it!

I will be getting from them a 30G rimless 24 x 24 x 12 on Sunday. I will let you know what I think of it. I have never ordered from them so I'm hoping it's nice. I too have heard mix stories but most of the complaints came from their silicone work and their customer service. I spoke with a woman on the phone that was nice to me but every time I asked for something I was told they don't do it. For example I wanted a external overflow but they don't do those. I settled on a rounded internal overflow I was told via email after I placed my order that they don't do those either. I guess they could point out that kind of stuff on the site or say something as soon as I mention it.
When my tank gets here and when it goes up I will share pictures.

God that's already a badass tank. Great dimensions!

This was one of the seams on the tank I got from them. The chip was likely due to poor cutting techniques. Ignoring that take a look at the silicone job.

Vic you scare me lol.. i just bought a 33G shallow rimless from them. Hope mine doesn't come out to be like that.. :s
On the other hand.. i've read a couple threads about the tanks that need dimensions changed or modified from the original ones listed directly on their site, are the ones that were sloppy and sub-par. I also saw a thread in RC about a 22G rimless that was made a couple weeks ago and the tank looked freakin awesome. The silicone job was excellent and the glass was nicely finished. I guess... like all other things in this world, there are lemons. And we all would only be so fortunate to receive one of these lemons..

Regarding my 33G tank.. it's 36x18x12 and i'm picking it up this Saturday. I shall take picherz and show everyone their work. I swear though.. if this tank is #### i'm going to mail it back to them in a small flat rate box. Just for lulz.

There are always lemons, but at a certain point you realize that if a company has such an alarming number of lemons that maybe that's just the norm for them.
Hopefully yours will be better looking than mine was

what they say when u called them about the chip?
VicSkimmr
Sep 7 2010, 01:45 PM
That they don't cover it. They don't cover chips or leaks with their warranty. So I basically had a $600 tank that I wasn't confident could hold water (it was 120 gallons). I ended up setting it up anyway and it never did leak till I tore it down about 6 months later.
Take from that what you will

I would have $%*# my pants if my tank had a chip like that in it. I've read some stories of things like that but my tank is pretty sweet other than the bottom corners where it looks like a 15 year old had some fun.
I guess it's just a coin toss really. Isn't there ANY other company that does custom rimless work?

Oh there are lots of them. They just charge 3 times what GC does. Luckily ADA/Greenleaf/Mr. Aqua makes tanks with dimensions that I really enjoy so my life is a lot simpler now.

Yeah, i hope mine won't have any chips and what not. But i've got a question.. if you were at the truck picking up your tank, and you saw right there that it looked like #### and had chips and what not.. could you refuse to accept it? I mean.. honestly.. are they just in this business to take your money? And whatever happens to the tank that they caused, they don't care? Vic, if you tried, could you have gotten your money back?

what is the point of a "warranty" if they dont cover chips and cracks in the glass? I dont know how glasscages stays in business with all the negativity EVERYWHERE on the net about them.

Probably because they're cheap.. and because they give out nice tanks on occasion.

You could probably refuse to accept it, but they'll have it all wrapped up so you can't see ####. When we picked ours up it was dark too. Additionally, the chip didn't actually fall out till it was in our possession being water tested.
I seriously doubt I could have gotten my money back. They have some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced, they are quite rude if you have
any issues regarding their products. I was hung up on when I tried to get my money back.

I dont understand their sizing either. They call a 50 long 36x18x16. That is the standard for a 40 breeder if I'm not mistaken. Their 40 longs are 36x18x12 for glass and 13 high for acrylic lol.

Yep.. that's what was confusing me as well. These guys are all mixed up i tell ya.. and they also try and get you to buy THEIR brand bulkheads, because they say every other bulkhead is cheap and worthless compared to theirs..... right. I just hope that when i get my tank, everything's alright and i don't ever have to deal with them again after that. But honest to god, if my tank is ####.. i'm going to make it my business to bring it back to them in ways they couldn't imagine. I'll take pics.

Let's get Zer0 this guys number just in case.
Call me old fashion, but I definitely vote trebuchet.
I'm sure it will go just fine. I was terrified about getting mine but I can't really make too many complaints. The glass is REALLLLLY thick but it doesn't look bad and there wasn't a single scratch on it.

Ok so I just got my tank from glasscages. I wrote up in detail my experience with them on another forum
HEREI will say that I am happy with my experience overall. The tank had excess silicone on the bottom which I had to trim off. Not a huge deal. The customer service was pretty good. Everyone I dealt with was very nice although not always clear. They gave me the wrong bulkheads but I had others anyways. I didn't get charged shipping since I picked it up at one of the shows they attended. The tank itself was really built solid.
I look at it this way. The people that have bad experiences are usually more vocal than the ones with good experiences. Hence you will hear more horror stories than good experiences. No tank company is perfect. Their prices are good in my opinion for what you get. Anyone who buys and doesn't research the item before their purchase is a moron, especially in this hobby. If you order from glasscages at least you know what to expect. I personally would recommend them to anyone.

My tank in my sig is a glass cages tank, 40b. I bought it used from another local reefer. Personally the silicone isnt the greatest but i think my corals hopefully will draw attention away from it

the glass is DEF thick i'll give them that.
