Full Version: Chemi-Pure...who uses it?

Well I have been using it and it seems to do some good, but I really have nothing to compare it to. I notice that a lot of fine black soot collects around my tank whenever the chemi pure bag is moved or the flow changes ( i turn off the pumps ) Im starting to dislike this and i am getting worried that it is going to sit in my tank and leach back into the water. So what is everyones experience?
moto826
Yours puts brown stuff in the water that's not good

Joke that's what I use
JayEeeTeeEss
I use elite.. make sure you give it a good rinse out of the tank before you put it in, most of the fine stuff will be removed.
ihatesears18
I use it (Chemi-pure elite) and love it

I think it is elite, oh its been in there about 2 weeks.. I rinsed it out real well too. Its weird like you cannot see it in the water but it appears on the LR and especially on the sand.

What did it do for you?

Is it possible I tore the bag?.. hmm I never thought about that before.

In what way though? How can YOU compare the two. Oh what difference have YOU seen.
Colione
I run elite.

I have to rinse mine for like 30 minutes in a bucket with like 5 batches of RODI water to get it clean.

I stopped a month ago, and now I run dual BRS which is pretty sweet

Crap i gotta head to class, NANO REEF IS TOO ADDICTING IM GOING TO MISS FINALS! Anyways, before I do go. Would there be any harm if i remove the bag and cut it open to separate it into smaller bags then rinse and put back... I would imagine just a small bit of bacteria would die off.
Crippler
I've used Chemi-pure Elite in the past and it worked fine. I've since switched over to mixing my own carbon and GFO blend. It's more economical than purchasing bag after bag of Chemi-pure Elite. Saves a ton of cash.

It has GFO...

I'm going to do the BRS bulk/build your own thing next time though. I run Elite, Purigen, and Floss.

BRS reactor = win.

uh wouldnt there be some bacteria colonizing on the bag that has been in my system for a couple of weeks?
gutterguy
I put in my tank and next day noticed a big difference in clarity, Very expensive to buy locally compared to carbon... looking to here from more people that have used both and switched. Also what is GFO blend?

It is very pricey, I have a big bag of carbon i could make my own mix with but i wanted to try the chemi pure. Also what is the BRS ?

+1 use the same method.
bruce922
I use Elite and love it. I also use Seachem Purigen and love that to. They both do the same thing, but I'm alfraid to take one of them out. My water and crystal clear all the time and don't know which one if keeping it that way.
Sushi
Elite user here too... what I don't like about the product, is throwing it away every 2-3 months to swap for a new one. Makes it seem like such a waste.

A reactor that you can run all this stuff in.

I have Purigen, CP Elite, and Floss in mine. Run by a little maxi jet pump. Flows pretty well in and out of my medium aquafuge2

Wow Billdemart you're already all high-tech! I might consider that in the future as my teeny weeny whisper filter's not doing much and sometimes vibrates my glass. sad.gif OP, check out bulkreefsupply.com. That's what "BRS" stands for. Which maxijet do you have running it?
dorito
In which order do you guys put your media in the filter?, I have Floss, Chemi-pure, Purigen then cheato, Is this ok or should I change the order?

Not sure, for a while I had the Rio 400 pump on there, wasn't that great. I switched to this little pump and it's much better for some reason.

Floss
Purigen

I'm about to change the order though to

Chaeto
Floss
Purigen
Chemi-Pure Elite

I place a bag in my sump every 2-3 months for just a week to clear out an possible 'Gelbstoff' (yellowing compounds).

One bag should last me many years smile.gif
pismo_reefer
I uses it....
Billdemart
I run it 24/7 just fyi.
scythe
Im about to switch to a modded ac70 in which i will run floss and a smaller bag of chemi pure then cheato.

Right now it is just chemi pure and cheato with a little unintentional algae turf going on.

I like the BRS idea but not yet maybe on a bigger tank.
nick1912
That works great, but gawd that is ugly!

of course I use it ! (i don't want cancer) (or dry water)

actually just swapped in a new bag yesterday, it had been about 6 mo (started noticing more brown stuff on the sand than normal, have a hunch that the cemi-pure running out is why, we'll see if the new bag fixes it)
JMAdams
I use it too...

I get so excited every time a big shipment of Chemi Pure comes in. You should see how clean it makes the UPS truck look. It also extends their oil life.

i thought that purigen was carbon replacement so why run chemi pure elite. why not use a pure gfo like phosban or even aluminum oxide like the phosguard product?

Yeah ideally you can hide it behind the tank, but with my setup it just doesn't work that way. Luckily from where I sit at my desk it's on the other side of the tank from me so I never see it. Doesn't bother me.
pazzo40
For those of you who use the BRS method, I put GFO and Carbon in separate bags and toss it in the media basket in the back of my 28G nano. Would it be ok to mix the GFO and Carbon in one back instead of using two?
Weetabix7
Just ordered me some Chemi-Pure Elite, I can't wait to experience true Wet Water!!! omgomgomg.gif

I do a water chane then rinse out in old tank water..
damage31
I started my tank using both elite + purigen. Then after ~5mo pulled both out when they were spent (or so I thought anyway based on the calendar). I suspect I may have discarded the purigen early- it wasn't "brown" like the mfg package indicated it would be, it was a light yellowish/tan I suppose when I discarded it.

So from Nov- till now I was just running floss + std weekly water changes. I noticed that I rid myself of the glass algae, but have been battling minor bouts of cyano + some other form of algae (probably bryopsis) that just wont die for a while now. Tried upping the Mg to 1800... no love. Tried API algae fix...no love... So just today I dropped in new packages of both products again to see what (if anything) happens to the cyano + algae in my fight.
wmo168
Chemi-Pure Elite, it works for me, remove all Red hair algae

Im planning to switch to BRS ROX with mesh bag and also GFO pellet in mesh bag too..i think it save cost in long run...

yes but i was told that gfo will wear out fast than carbon so better stay w/ 2 bags
