Considering I have 32W of NO T5s on a 12g I'd say you've got quite a bright set up. Now if you have individual reflectors that'll make it high lighting IMO.

yea its individual reflectors so can i keep a frogspawn or toadstool at the top of the tank?

I'd say in the upper moderate range.

Maybe start mid way first and see how they react first.

Moderate. I wouldn't say high because there are only 2 bulbs, which places a big limit on bulb combinations.

As they say, "One person's high lighting is another person's moderate lighting"

...or as Einstein once said, "Its all relative" smile.gif

You should be able to keep em about anywhere in the tank .. shouldnt have to be in the top i would not think. But they might appreciate you more if they were higher smile.gif

You should only stick with medium light SPS like montiporas and seriatoporas (birdsnest).

For your algae outbreak, it's impossible to tell what to do until you can identify the algae (pictures help) and provide more information (i.e. water parameters, freshwater source, tank size).

the algae on my rock is from the base rock turning into live rock, or at least thats what i was told. i got algae on the sand and was told it was diatoms.

should i wait on adding the SPS till the tank matures more? would 6 months in be a good time to add them?

thanks for the help

Yes, SPS should not be the first corals, especially for a beginner. For the algae, read this:
