After getting some Ammonia readings
early in the cycle I never got any nitrite
readings. Does this sound normal or has this
happened to anyone else?

it goes from Ammonia to Nitrite then to final product Nitrate. So your cycle is just started

What is your nitrate level, and what test kit brand(s) are you using? Was the live rock cured; how was it transported?

It's somewhat common for nitrites to quickly follow ammonia to zero ppm, with nitrates taking much longer to lower. However, it's always a good idea to wait longer.

I never saw a lot of anything, sometimes you do sometimes you dont, but +1 to lakshadeep.

The rock was transported by me from my lfs 20 minutes away in large plastic bags. It
came right out of some of his display tanks. About 3 days after being in my tank I got readings
of about .25-.5 ppm ammonia and never got any detectable nitrite or nitrate(yet) readings
for that matter. Now it's about 3 weeks later and I just added a cuc a couple days ago
mainly because things have remained at zero. I did get what seemed to be the diatom
bloom of brown algae turning to green/ some hair algae that the cuc has been diligently
removing. Also, there are lots of I guess copepods along the rocks and back wall (hard
for me to see them to identify well even with the i.d. forum.). My testing kit is all API stuff.
ph is between 8.3-8.4
and sg @ just under 1.025 using 12 dollar hydrometer.

Since you got rock from a local display tank, it sounds like you finished a "mini" cycle where there was already an established bacterial population.

I would still do a small water change with RO/DI.
