so im planning out a 120 x 24 wide x 30 high reef tank buld. mostly softies and lps w some monti's. do u think i should go with 2 60" 80- watt powermodules or 20 evilpar38's?? which would put out more par?
also i was thinking maybe 2 60" 80watt ATI Sunpower with a track of evil par38's on each side of the ati unit. what do you think would kick off the most par into the tank?
Rehype
Id go with the powermodules and add evils par38's as supplemental lighting.

I say a 6 bulb ATI w/ a track of PAR38s on each side.

If money isn't a problem, I would probably just do an 8 bulb powermodule with these on each side:

T5s for PAR, LEDs for the color.

A powermodule will give you plenty of kick.

I saw that tank in person on Saturday after Reefstock. In-freakin-credible.

What did you think about the reefbrites?

great idea!! could i leave these reef brites on all night as a moonlight led or would that be bad for the corals?

That would be too much power.

Evil's talkin about the tank with the reefbrites on it.

I don't know about the reefbrites being adjustable. I don't think they are.

It's not necessary for your tank to have a moonlight on all night. With the T5s off and the Reefbrites on, the tank will look better than under just moonlights.

oh yea thats what i wanted to do but i thought u said the reefbrites on is too bright? i like nightlights bc u get to enjoy trhe tank during the night also. u see all the little critters come out its really cool i think. and im a night owl

The Reefbrites are adjustable, but only manually. You would have to set the brightness every night. There are many good dedicated moonlight options available.

Nemo Niblets, the Reefbrites are pretty good. They are the best option so far for supplimental LED lighting.

The answer is going to be... It depends...

Do you want consistent PAR across the whole tank and an even light distribution or a setup where PAR will be very intense then drop off the further you get from center point on the light?

Do you want shimmer?

How much spectrum diversity do you want?

What are your thoughts on power consumption, bulb life, etc?

Etc.

If you want constant PAR and allot of spectrum diversity then its the ATI. If you want shimmer and don't care about the other two as much then LED same with power consumption and bulb life except in reverse. In that if both matter to you then you want LED.

yes even par no drop off
no shimmer
indifferent about spectrum
would be a plus to not use so much power and have long bulb life of course
Urchinhead
Then you want to go T5.

LED's are a point source (spot light) light which means you will have logarithmic (I think) drop off as you move farther from the very center of the light source. You may or may not get more PAR at the center point than T5's but like I said it will drop off as you move further away.

The reason why ATI does so well is the reflectors and the cooling system.
