Full Version: Mystery Wrasse question

Goonter
I am looking into purchasing one of these and i have a tail spot blenny. I have been told that the mystery wrasse has been known to eat firefish, so i am wondering if he would eventually eat my tail spot blenny as they are about the same size and shape? I have a peppermint and a cleaner shrimp as well, but i am told if they are preestablished before the wrasse, they will be fine. Any thoughts on this?

Also as a side note, are they jumpers? I realize all fish can 'jump', but are these known for it?

i have mystery and helfrichi in the same tank . it should be fine w/your blenny

I do not think they would even eat a firefish so your blenny should be just fine.

You'll be fine. I have a mystery with a bicolor and firefish. Never have issues. Try to get your mystery as small as you can.

I would get a top as they can jump. Not worth the risk of losing a 100+ dollar fish

Ummm....my Mystery Wrasse ate my Helfrichi firefish in one bite. That's probably what Goonter is referring to. It can happen.

How big was your Mystery Wrasse? or rather, how small was your Helfrichi?

I'm looking to add a Mystery Wrasse (it's a small one, 1.5inch tops), but don't want to risk getting my helfrichi become one VERY expensive meal...

One bite?!?! That must be one hell of a big wrasse and one hell of a small Helfrichi! Blenny was in the tank first so the mystery may be beat up a bit by him. Just make sure you have a covered top. They jump at the drop of a hat.

i put a 1 inch mystery wrasse in my tank and nothing died not even shrimp!

Got a covered top smile.gif Just worried if the wrasse will make a quick dinner out of the firefish like the above post says. I mean, I have seen those big 3.5-4 inch mystery wrasse make a quick meal out of the cleaner shrimp inside the tank of LFS tongue.gif but since the one I want is tiny, hopefully that won't happen o.o

I have a mystery and a helfrichi, the wrasse is significantly larger then the helfrichi and they get along great! they are always chilling in the front of the tank togeher within 1-2 inches of eachother all day and then at night they each have there own crevises where they sleep. I definitely think that the blenny and wrasse or the wrasse and a firefish can coexist in a nano....by the way my tank is a 24g aquapod.

Shrimp, including cleaners, are the natural prey of wrasse. Rule of thumb is if shrimp is 1/2 again as big as wrasse no trouble but there are exceptions. Your firefish will be fine. Just make sure its in the tank first and is there for a while.

yep, wrasse will be the last fish....and helfrichi was the first fish in xD

About that cleaner shrimp...that shrimp was just as big, if not bigger tongue.gif so I probably saw that 'exception' hehe.

Anyways, thanks for the confirmation (although this wasn't my thread o.O) But will be picking up the wrasse this weekend...for....60!!! biggrin.gif
