Tank Dimensions: 5.5gal pico reef
16''Long/8''Wide/10''High

Light Dimensions: 2x 18w - 36watt Total
12''Long/7.25''Wide/2.5''High

Chose the light because 36watt/5.5gal = 6.5w/gal

If I just place the light on a black EggCrate, will it be ok?
Im concerned for evaporation.

Any quick/simple/nice looking ideas?

out dated info... it will sustane softies..watts per gal rule is relative..

example, 150watts of metal halide is not the same as 150 watts of power compact

evaperation should be minimal with that fixrture

Alright.

Will it burn the corals if its placed about 1.5inchs off the water lvl?
Aka on eggcrate.

So onto the first question now. smile.gif

If you are concerned about evaporation, eggcrate isn't going to help. The Nova Extreme comes with mounting legs, and I'd suggest using them. The extra elevation will help with spread and overall apearance.

At this point, Im looking more for help on the title of the thread.
Which was a DIY light fixture hanger.

The light is purchased already, and will arrive on friday.

Obviously eggcrate wont help for evap, but I know that if I just throw the light on the eggrate, it will be very close to the water level, aka causing more evap.

No offense, but you weren't exactly clear on any of that throughout this entire thread, with the exception of that last post.

Why do you need to hang the fixture? Current USA Novas don't come with provisions to hang, so you would have to modify the housing to do so.

Well the thread title was pretty clear, i had also tried to post the link to the lighting fixture I purchased, but I guess I failed to include that...

Like you said, mounting the lighting unit would light the whole thing much better, as the light fixture is 12inch, and the tank is 16inch long...

It comes in on friday, so I kinda wanted to have a solution for this by friday...
Ill be installing my powerhead friday, and I wont have the chance to get any eggcrate before saturday I guess.
If thats the solution we find for me.

i have the 9x2 version of that fixture (6.5k & 460nm) on my 5.5g aio ( aio is 4x8x10)

it's about .75-1" away from the top of the water colum. It keeps softies & my frogspawn very happy.

use some chain & S hooks from home depot to hang it. or just lay it right over the top.

Pretty sure with the standard clear legs you could get 16" out of the light, as in use the legs to sit it on top of the tank. I have this exact same light and will be a hero and measure the spread for you when I get home for lunch in an hour smile.gif
Crackerballer
Let me just say.... it's going to be close. With no modification to the light or legs, I was able to extend the legs out and get to about 15.5" I think if you trimmed the black plastic on the edge of the light on both sides, you could get it to 16". Do you have the tank yet? Is it exactly 16" from outside edge to outside edge? If it is 16" or less then I think you can make the stock legs work, no problem.

Somehow misplaced the measuring tape, I get the fixture 2moro anyways, so Ill just test it out. wink.gif
Does it come with the clear legs?

Either get a smaller tank or a bigger light. I would suggest selling one or the other and getting one to match.

just for ideas. http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=127089

You had to order the legs seperate, they are like $8. What Blockclimber linked to is a good idea too.

Yep, seen this thread before, I just find it kinda ugly sigh.
I guess this will be option 2 behind just sitting it on the egg crate.

Alright, I think I remember them actually having that in stock @ the store, they just didnt have the light fixture.

LOL.

I ended up with a 8''/11'' peice of acrylic, placed it from one side to the other, and sat the light on it.
It heats the tank to much though...

Add a fan. Evaporative cooling is very effective. If you raise the fixture, you lose light. PCs aren't that great for light production as is, so you need all the help you can get.
