hi everyone. so i have decide that i am going to add a sump to a 28 gallon aqua euro it would only be a 10g sump. but the real question i have is the pump i have is a eheim 1000 it pushes 260ghp. the problem i am having is that it output is a 5/8" connection the pvc i am using for pipe overflow is 3/4". i want to use 3/4" pvc when the water enters the tank so that i do not have to worry about the flex tubing coming loose obliviously. does anyone know if home depot carries some fitting or some way to fit these two peaces together.

Unfortunately there is no such animal as 5/8" in PVC. That Eheim is Metric.

One work around would be to use a small piece of hose (12") between the pump and the PVC, on the other end get a 3/4" MPT/hose barb and work the barb down to fit the hose (better use a hose clamp here) and then continue up with the rigid PVC to the tank.

Eheim makes a number of green return pipes that have U tubes so you can have a rigid bit to go back into your aquarium while using flexible tubing on the way up from the pump. If you use hose clamps (plastic is better in this case) you can be pretty certain that the barbed fittings won't go anywhere, but you have to be sure to keep the kinks out of the return line - of course this isn't as much of a problem as the to-sump line because it is somewhat pressurized.

If you really want to use PVC for the return, I believe you can get 5/8" barbs threaded to 1/2" or 3/4" MPT fittings. I couldn't find any at my local big box hardware store (only have 1/2" and 3/4" sizes of barb) but a smaller store with more selection of fittings could probably get you one in plastic (brass is a NO). From there you would need to run the MPT threads into a threaded PVC coupling of the appropriate size, and would need to be sealed with a rubber O ring or thread sealing tape, but that could effectively give you a 5/8" barb to hook into either 1/2" or 3/4" PVC, so with a short flexible pipe extension to connect it, it would be essentially a rigid pvc return.

thanks this helps a lot. i found the fitting and it worked perfectly. i could only get it at a smaller hardware store. the only other problem i have now is that the pvc overflow i am using witch is 3/4" cant handle the pump i have. i reseached and the 3/4 is suppose to be able to handle something like 300 ghp my pump pumps 240 with head lose so i thought that i would be able to handle this any thoughs on how i could get more flow with out haveing to go to 1" piping?
heres a picture on a 10 gallon tank im making into a sump
