Full Version: 10 Gallon With Perc Clown

I've got a ten gallon nano with a smaller perc clown. What else should I add? I'm kinda stuck! I've been trying to come up with another one or two that have some different colors to make the tank more interesting. It has to be reef safe, though, because I've got zoas and palys at the moment, but the plan is to add rics, gsp, shrooms, frogspawn and birds nest[I'm sure there will be more on the list soon, lol!].

A royal gamma is very colorful and small enough for a 10 gallons, but I would not put too many fish in there.

Are you joking? The clown needs to go ASAP! I overstock but I don't but clowns in 10g! Don't even think about adding more fish. You need to take the clown out and get a Yellow Clown Goby or 2. They barely get bigger than an inch.

Not to be an arse, but this isn't the best advice. I've heard of and seen many, many, many nano tanks with clownfish in there. The OP stated the clown is a young juvenile. The clownfish will get around 3.5 to 4" max if it's indeed a Percula or Occ. They normally take a few years to reach full adult size. IMO the main reason people don't recommend clownfish for smaller tank is how territorial they'll eventually get. Not very, but I've read that in smaller tanks they can become issues. I wouldn't be too concerned and honestly I think the fellow, if taken well care of will fare off well.

As far as what fish to add, I'd recommend to check out some smaller gobies as stated. Green banded, clown, yasha , hi-fin goby, firefish or a few other smaller gobies make good candidates. Some can even be paired off with a pistol shrimp and display a really cool symbiotic relationship.

I will say we as hobbyist should do the utmost research on what we put in our tank, but I try to never tell anyone to change something without a clear reason to do so. Check out the sticky of LGreen's thread. He's got an excellent overview of the types of nano fish along with their temperament and care requirements. Feel free to ask more though, that's the purpose of the board!

I've got a juvi Clown in a 5g right now - hosts the top corner and only swims in a 6" section
just as it did in the 24g - which it's going back to once it gets paired up

I have the 0.5-10 gallon list printed out tongue.gif . I was thinking either a green clown goby or a neon goby, and I'd really like either a cherub angelfish or a firefish. I just didn't want to start buying until I have a list locked down so I don't get into any more trouble than I already have with the clown. I looked into clowns, but I didn't see all this stuff about them being so aggressive until after I got him for some reason huh.gif
GT AQUATICS
a clown in a 10 gallon tank is fine. Even in the wild they dont move further than their anemone.
~LadyBug~
^That's what I was thinking smile.gif

What if I do a neon goby and a firefish? Do ya'll think that would work out?
~LadyBug~
Okay, so I've been thinking[and thinking and thinking... tongue.gif ] about this, and these are my stocking ideas:
a.)
1 Perc clown
1 Neon goby
1 Firefish

b.)
1 Perc clown
1 Neon Goby
1 Royal Gramma

c.)
1 Perc clown
1 Cherub angelfish
1 Scooter blenny

d-e :not sure about these, would it work to have 3 fish and none of them be bottom dwellers?
d.)
1 Perc Clown
1 Firefish
1 Cherub angelfish

e.)
1 Perc clown
1 Royal gramma
1 Cherub angelfish

Whatever you do, DO NOT put a Cherub/Pygmy angel in a 10g tank. That would be cruel.
Dizzle21
a or b sounds good.
and ya dont put a pygmy angel in there.
and i believe scooter blennies are actually dragonettes and need a mature tank with lotsa pods.

didn't realize about 'scoot scoot' as my little sis calls them. she loves 'em, so i figured i'd see. i always thought ten was too small for angels, but it's on the fish list sticky, so i figured it'd be okay...
32Bit_Fish
My two clownfish swim a lot, I see them go from one end to the other and my tank is 36" long. I'm sure they appreciate a bigger swimming space.
Banjo
If I were you I'd get another clown.

But if variety is your goal, a and b are both fine.

As far as a cherub in a 10g is concerned, I don't really have a view on it. It's a very small angel, but on the other hand they do like to swim a lot. If you did go this route, I wouldn't add a third fish for aggression and bioload reasons.
porksoda
I vote A or B. I lean more toward A though.
smokey_the_bear
i dont see a problem with a clown in a ten smile.gif
i have a baby perc in a 5 gallon and he's just the most happy thing ever, doesnt swim every where just chills in the current and like to investigate what im doing when i go near the tank
r20crazy
More than a single fish in a 10g (unless they are small like a yellow goby) will be a HUGE bioload in a 10g tank. with larger bioloads you are looking at waterchanges every 2 days (ish), and the purchase of a skimmer (and not a cheap $50 one) to remove wastes. I have had a single clown in my 10g for over 4 years. I wouldn't dare put another fish in there, as clowns get very protective of their 'area' and will attack other fish that enter it, especially in smaller setups. there isn't much other 'area' in a 10g, so there would be constant war and fish stress, which can lead to death and disease.
