Full Version: Anyone done the Koralia mod?

Has anyone here done the Koralia mod so you can use it on a timer or wavemaker?

It basically involves adding a piece of airline tubing to quiet it and make it start up in the proper direction without all the rattling or wear and tear on the shaft.

The new evolutions have this built in, but I have a Koralia already and am wanting to add a timer style wavemaker.

I'm just looking for some input from someone who has had some positive or negative results with this.

Thanks!

I cut the braces off of mine but I bought a wavemaker for them. The removal of the braces is OK it does however make less streamline flow.

The fins on the intake part? Was that just to try to get a little bit more flow by reducing restriction?

Has anyone tried the airline tube mod to silence them when used on a wavemaker?

all your adding is some tubing on the shaft? try it out.

I used it to give me some exra flow, I added a k3 today gave me ALOT of flow. And I run my Koralias on timers without any mods and they do fine

Hydor just came out with a new koralia that you can put on a wavemaker/timer.

Yeah the OP is aware of that.

Yeah, just trying to save some $$$ by using what I already have.

Anyone else with some input?

I did it when I had 4 K4's running on my 220 (way back when the Koralias came out and people started to mod them) I had them connected to a readsea wavemaker. clicking noise went away and they will "almost" always start on the right direction. It's a good cheap mod (that and replacing the propeller will give you a ton of flow)

Then vortech came to the market and I said by by to the K4 happy.gif

Awesome. that's what I was hoping to hear.

Thanks for your input!

Thumbs up to this mod for the K nanos on a wavemaker. I hooked my nanos up to a ReefKeeper Lite (use plugs 1 & 4 because 2 & 3 wont turn off on a low voltage device like a small power head, unless you add a small surge protector between the RKL and the powerhead) and they rattled like crazy. I cut about 1/8" of tubing and put it in front of the propeller and it worked like a charm. 1/4" wouldn't let the props spin, but a smaller sliver of tubing worked. I have it on the random setting and the powerheads alternate every few minutes with no noise.

I think I figured out a better mod than the airline tubing. The airline tubing is a similar diameter to the propeller's center hole and I realized after a day or two, the propeller was getting hung up on the little tube. I went to Home Depot and bought a little bag of #6 nylon flat washers (the little clear white ones). They exactly fit over the stem on the inside of the front cover. So far they prevent the vibration and are not slowing or freezing up the propeller.

FWIW, my Koralia still hops in and out when it turns on. It is much quieter though which is what I wanted...
