Full Version: Anemone ID?

Hey Gang,
I'm new to the forum and was hoping you could help me ID these little beauties. The LFS told me they are just polyps, but I think they are anemones. Their color is a deep red, their center disk is about ther size of your thump nail, and their arms are about an inch long. I feed them live brine shrimp and they were happy little things. They are using tenacles to grab my CB shrimps antenna and latching onto the feather duster next to them. I don't feel a sting when I touch them, but that could be because I keep jellies and get stung all the time. Anyone think they maybe Waratah Anemones?

Pic is too blurry when you open it. What color is the base and is it smooth or warty in appearence. More pics would really help.

Hopefully this is a bit clearer. The base is smooth and a light pink color. The algae on the rock is a bit embarrassing...sorry =)

I believe they are polyps too. The are beautiful regardless, Waratah anemones usually cost alot and require a cooler tank. Tell us about your jelly fish though, with pics if you would. biggrin.gif

Waratah 35 dollors per small anemone, going rate.

Have you ever seen these polyps before? Thanks for your reply.

No I have not, but there are so many types. Very cool jelly tank, you should post a thread about it. I know they are upside down jellies, but how long have you had them, what filtration are you using, lighting and what are you feeding them? Very cool indeed.

Where should I post it? Total newbie.

Thanks, I love my jellies. They are upside down jellies (6 total), but I also have three purple spotted lagoon jellies on there way to add to the mid-water. I can't wait!

I've had them 3 months, and loved every minute of it. They are a LOT of work though. 20-25% water changes 1-2 times a week. Daily feeding of 1,000ml of live, selco enriched brine shrimp. Diatoms are always a problem because of the constant nutrients from daily feedings so I use my mag float faithfully. They do like some trace amounts of ammonia, but less than 20ppm of nitrates. Water temp around 78-80 degrees.

I use a subcurrent 160 gph internal filter, which gives them the very low flow that they thrive in. I have to change the sponge daily. For lighting, I use the solana 150w MH; 14,000k pendant at 12on/12off.

Can I upload videos on here?

Wow, nice Cassiopeia. I absolutely love those things, especially after seeing them in the seagrass beds in the Caribbean. Have you had any trouble keeping them with the clam? I would think they'd eventually bump into it when they decide to move around, but your tank is living proof.
rockhead01
The clam will close up when their shadows fall on him as they swim around or bump into him, but otherwise they are doing great together. I think he was stung early on, but they figured it out on their own =)

Sorry, did not mean to not get ids on your polyps, but I knew they would go crazy for jellyfish. Have fun biggrin.gif
