I have a used APC Smart UPS 1400 back up power supply with an extra brand new replacement battery. The unit has outlets on the back side to plug heaters and pumps into or anything else in your tank you want to keep running in the event of a power outage. It can last 5 hours with 50 watt draw. It is quite heavy so I am not going to ship it. I am located in Sherman Oaks 91423 in Los Angeles near where the 405 and the 101 meet. The casing has some dents in it but it doesn't affect the performance at all. The price is now $50 or trade for corals.

critmin
Or trade for corals.

free bump for you. i got one of these in a trade and mine needs a battery. where is a good place to find them? any specific type? thanks
critmin
What is the model number? You should be able to look it up on the website and lot's of online retailers sell the replacement batteries.

My reef is running at 1500 watts how long will it last? If its just straight math I calculated about 10 mins. is this right?

you wouldn't plug everything into the backup. you would just put the essentials on it, so if the power goes out the tank won't crash and give you much needed time to figure something else out if needed and to get home. so you'd run say a maxijet 400 (5w) and say a 100w heater (keeping in mind it wouldn't always be on) to sustain some form of flow and temp control. you don't have to have lights for things to survive short term. so then you would have a max of 105w at any given time, which would be about 2.5hrs run time. if you are home you can manually turn the ups off and on to make it last even longer.

I only have a pump pluged into mine, but my ups rating is MUCH less.
rock_lobster
Well that definitely makes sense hmm I guess you couldn't ship though because it is so heavy.
critmin
Thanks R20crazy. Yep you wouldn't plug everything in. It's not a generator but it's a good life support system during a blackout.

5 hours for 50 watts, so it's only 250 watts power supply? I am surprised it is so massive since I have a 400 watts Noma which will power up 50 watts for about 8 hours and it's quite small. why is this so heavy?

It has 950 Watts capacity. The reason the run time is less is because it converts DC to AC for normal power plugs. The Noma you are talking about probably goes DC to DC which is much more efficient however you won't be able to plug normal pumps or heaters into it since they are usually designed with only AC power input. Unless of course you have a vortech which was designed to be compatible with their DC to DC power back up.

The APC back up power supply is heavy because the battery is huge to hold 50 watts of power. You can see it in the picture next to the unit.

And I am lowering the price to $50 or trade for corals. I just need to get this out so I can setup my new tank.

Fwiw this is the same thing I use on mine. I have the return pump and heater only plugged into it and it has saved me a few times. Of course I also have a siphon overflow that even though I've tested it probably 50 times, I don't want to chance it losing it's siphon so the battery backup is insurance to me.
critmin
Yeah that's an excellent application for the power back up. Redundancies for your overflow box are always good. I'm switching to a built in overflow so I won't be needing this anymore.

I can put anything that run on the 110 volts on my noma. It's especialy made as a power back up for the house, not for the computer.

Not sure why APC last such short period with such high watts but it's not the case with home power backup.

I can plug normal pump and normal heater, what ever I want. Of couse a 200 watts heater is not going to last more than 2 hours or so, but since it's not on all the time, it may last longer. I have a small 50 watts heater and my 9 watts filter plugged on it and when power fail it can run for about 5 to 6 hours depending how much the heater is ON.

It weight very little and turn on or off automaticaly in case of power failure, and when the power is back it recharge automatic. It's not AC but regular plug.

All the APC we have at work don't last much more than 10 minutes or so when power fail. Basicaly just enough to shot down the computer and those are regular desk computer..so not sure why they cost so much, do so little and weight so much.

Well the reason the ones at work don't last long is because the power draw is much higher. Also I am not sure what the purpose of your posts on this thread are. Are you trying to sell your noma instead? If so you can post your own sale thread.

Also I don't know what noma you have but it sounds a bit suspicious. The part that you are referring to that is "very light" may just be the controller part while the battery is located remotely. And I don't know what you mean by "It's not AC but regular plug", regular plugs use AC current. You sound like you are just trying to market your battery supply or something.

If you want to discuss power back ups in more detail please start a new thread. I just want to sell or trade this. I would prefer not to have a discussion about it.

I just purchased a APC XL1000 on craigslist for $75 it retails for about $400-$500 online any input on this item?
Dani3d
No I have nothing for sale, I was just curious to know why some don,t last long and are very heavy and some are much smaller and lighter and last longer.

Actualy I was looking to buy a bigger unit and your post was confusing me as to what to choose because I though such big and heavy unit as what you had would last much longer. I want something more powerfull than my 400 watts unit but something that will last like 10 hours at least.
