Full Version: Stocking suggestions for 10 gallon frag tank

My friend and I recently went a little overboard fragging. We cut so many frags that neither of us had any open sand left in our tanks, so I dug a 10 gallon out of storage and set up a frag tank, using some sand, rock, and rubble from my dispay and sump.

Currently, the frag tank is housing some zoanthids, some palythoa, some blue anthela, and a couple of snails.

If this were your tank, what fish and/or inverts would you stock it with?

IMO I would put maybe 2. More comfortable with 1 fish though.
Something small. Maybe a tiny clown fish so it doesnt make a very big mess.
If you want a pair go for it.
As for inverts maybe a few blue leg hermits, few nasarrious(sp?) snails, Nerite snails, and that should be good.
Its always good to have a little CUC to clean after your fish.
You dont want too many fish to make too big of a bio-load.

if its just a frag tank why would you want fish in it at all?

I was thinking the same thing but maybe he wants something to look at.
IMO I think straight frag tanks are kinda boring. They look amazing but nothing is really going on.
I love to see crabs, snails, and fish doing what they do. Its soo cool!

probably to make it more interesting smile.gif

This may sound backwards to some, but here's what I was thinking: fish+food=nutrients in the water=better coral growth without dosing.

If I do add a fish, I want it to be one that earns its keep by eating algae or stirs the sand or something along those lines.

There are some corals that do better in nutrient rich environments, so i can see this train of thought in a way.

The mojority of fragging that I see going on is of zoas and SPS corals for the most part. (yes acans and soe LPS also its not an inclusive list)

The way i look at it.. if your doing a frag or healing tank then the less nutrients and most pristine the water is the less chance of infection etc you have. For a display fish make total sense..

for a tank with mother colonies it makes sense..

for healing and such I am not gonna say its wrong but kinda dont think it will matter much to have the nutrients there. The dosing you would do would be trace elements , calcium etc.

IF i were to put a fish in there.. I would think of a Blenny personally .. doscile (spelling) and low waste especially like a lawnmower or something that can help with algae.

FYI all corals do better in a nutrient rich environment, you just can let phos or nitrates get to high, the ocean is very rich in nutrients and tends to grow even SPS much faster than most aquariums. As far as fish maybe a sixline or something to eat bugs.
