Hey guys, I thought I'd chime in here because Brent (the owner of the site) is a friend of mine and it seems a lot of people here seem to mistakenly believe he has some nefarious plan to inflate coral prices. Let me just start by saying that Brent has been something of a mentor to me in this hobby and has hooked me up with a lot of sweet coral and helpful advice. He is truly one of the "good guys" in this hobby and has the utmost respect for ALL the living creatures in his tank - cheap or expensive, common or rare.

I'm not even sure where to start here so I guess I'll dive into the "coral naming" debate. I personally feel the same way a lot of you do about the insane prices some people will pay for frags of rare "LE" corals. That being said, this is capitalism; the prices these frags are sold for is dictated by what the consumer will pay for them. Further, I frankly don't see how giving a coral a certain name is going to raise its price. If tomorrow, Purple People Eater zoanthids became Purple Rain zoanthids, do you think their price would fall to $2 per polyp? Of course not! Coral names are used for identification, and in that capacity they are useful. You'd have to be an idiot to buy a coral simply because the name is cool. A lot of people who are not familiar with the hobby ask me why some of my corals are more valuable than others. What I tell them is that the value of a coral is based on its looks, and more importantly, its rarity (and as an offshoot of that, its growth rate). The name itself has nothing to do with its value.

As for the NCRA. I hope people don't have the misguided impression that the site's intent is to raise prices. The site is a service - and a free one I might add - for those who DO choose to spend big money on corals. In other words, the goal is not to raise the price, but to ensure that the buyer knows what they are getting. There are a lot of lookalike (some might call them "knockoff," I probably wouldn't...) corals out there and while I personally wouldn't mind having them in my tank, I wouldn't want to spend $100+ on a frag only to learn its not the coral I thought it was. Some people will find that trivial I'm sure - it looks almost the same, so why do you care if its X or Y? - and I can't say I blame them. But I think plenty of people would agree with me here. I remember an 8th grade field trip my class took to Washington D.C.: I bought a knockoff Rolex (knowing full-well it was fake of course) for $10. No harm done, but what if I had spent $1,000 on it, believing it was real? Okay, a watch isn't the same as a coral, and it's kind of an extreme example, but it's the same concept.

I had a lot to say and I'm sure I've forgotten some of it. I know this is a long-winded, rambling post and I apologize for that. But I hope some of the more skeptical people on here will be willing to give this site a chance. Check it out for yourselves and I think you'll find it is much more harmless than you would think.

As a side note for those of you worrying about whether you'll get your Purple Hornet - I can't personally guarantee anything to do with the NCRA as I'm not involved in it. But I will tell you this: Brent is a 100% stand-up guy and I know he wouldn't do something like this if he wasn't prepared to follow through. In fact he's already said that the membership drive will come to an end once they run out of polyps. As far as I know these polyps are coming mainly from vendors who are associated with/sponsoring the site so it may be complicated to get the whole operation done but I'm sure everyone will get theirs in time. I also know that as the site grows he's wanting to do more giveaways with some really beautiful frags. The site is still a work in progress and I know Brent has been scrambling to keep up with all the PMs he's getting so be patient. I really do think in time his site will be one of the best out there.

I didn't even know there was a right click filter until someone just posted a thread about it because I use a greasemonkey script that blocks BS right click filters.

Although everyone should be using a mouse with forward/back buttons or alt+left/right to go forward/back, ctrl+left click to open a link in a new tab and downthemall to download pics

it's too bold a move to be fake. they don't have enough time to enjoy short term advertising gains and if they don't come through their name will be worthless.

Chill -- I am on that site chatting with the mods on a daily basis -- the frags will ship --right now they have over 100 to ship -- depending on where you are in the lineup it's going to take a little while.

They weren't even planning on shipping before the first of april, so give 'em some time.

I am on the list as well though. Around #81 I think so it will be a while. But that's perfectly fine with me as they are free after all. And I am still setting up my tank so it gives me some time. Other wise I would have had to put the little frag into coral foster care lol.
