Rich and I are coworkers, this is "his" tank but I take care of it on his weekend. I ended up snagging the second egg raft they produced (the one that is in all the photos) and take care of the babies on the weekend.

Unfortunately the first few batches did not survive but they have been pretty prolific and spawned 4 times in a little less than 2 weeks. The really cool part about this is that the two fish involved are what the taxonomists consider 2 different "species". More to come on that, stay tuned... wink.gif

Will they continue to spawn routinely? And what did you attempt to feed them? Sorry about the questions. biggrin.gif

No please ask away!

We saw 4 spawns over the course of about 12 days. They were around 2-3 days apart, but the last one came 4 days after the one before it. We haven't seen a spawn since last week, so they may have stopped for now. We really have no idea what cued the spawn and what stopped it. Truth is, no one has any idea how often they are supposed to spawn, how many times in total, or anything. We still don't know what time of day they are doing it either.

Keep in mind this is the first and only time anybody has ever seen spawning, eggs, or larvae from this genus, in the wild or in captivity that we're aware of. We have no idea what to expect.

The larvae were offered rotifers but didn't appear to eat any. If/when they spawn again we hope to have several other foods available to offer them.

Thanks Matt, I viewed the pics of the fry and they look really really small. I can imagine finding the right food is going to be a challange at best. Congradulations, very exciting stuff.

LOL... bless your heart. Ya, I heard about it a couple of weeks ago. Glad to have proof of what was being suspected. Because there are just some Eschy's that look like frondosa's and vice versa.
animalmaster6
That Eschy does look like a Frondsa.
