Bio-Reef
Hi, I have a biocube 14 and right now I have only 2 fish, 1 Ocellaris Clown and 1 yellowtail dmasel. Can I get another small fish? If so, what would you get for a OPEN TOP tank? Something under $30?
fmfa0801
I have 4 fish in my biocube 14 open top. 2 Picassos, 1 pygmy angel, 1 mandarin. No problems.

How's the pygmy angel going for you? Do you have any SPS or small polyped corals?
fmfa0801
I have 2 anemones, zoas, SPS and other coral. Not one time have i seen it or notice it eating or nipping coral. The angel is about 1.5 inches. I have read that they are 50/50 if the pick at stuff. I feed my mysis and brine and pellet.

go for a goby/pistol shrimp combo. Amazing to watch, for hours and hours. I speak from experience.

I don't think you can get a goby/pistol pair for under $30. I like a goby or a blenny. I have a tailspot blenny and it is awesome. Yellow watchman gobies are nice and are pretty common. A yasha haze goby would be sweet as well, but you might have trouble for finding one in the price range listed.

My last suggestion would be a sixline. I say sixline because you have a couple territorial/aggressive fish in the tank and you should add something that can hold it's own. A goby or blenny would hide a lot, but if they get harassed, you may never see them and they might have a hard time competing for food. JMO.

IMO 4 fish, specifically those fish, is just asking for trouble...

You've only had the angel for a month, and the dragonet for probably less. Keep them all in that tank for a year and then come back with "no problems" (hopefully, but still doubtful). All I'm saying is that you might consider the experience level of the OP before such a comment. At least post your maintenance schedule and/or equipment particulars. If you experience trouble it seems as though you have a 34g you could move some fish to. Not everyone has that luxury.

Bio-reef. Adding another fish is up to you, but make sure you're prepared to handle the increased bioload. IMO a small goby would be ideal. They add personality and especially with a shrimp can be quite interesting. A centropyge angel of any kind IMO isn't appropriate for your tank. Even pygmy (or cherub) angel can grow to 4" in length. I would also avoid wrasses (likely to become very aggressive in a small tank) and dragonets (incl. scooter blenny). Anyways, good luck with your tank, whatever you decide to do.
googoomas
i would add a watchman, blenny of some sort, or maybe some kind of basslet?

BTW, if you can/will, get rid of the damsel.. IMO smile.gif

I was not saying to do it or dont do it. Im just saying that MY 14g biocube tank has 2 Picassos, 1 pygmy angel, 1 mandarin and MY tank does not have a bioload problem. SO it is possible to have 4 fish in a 14g but the fish I have will outgrow that tank. Yes I have a 39g tank with 12 sump im switching over to in a week.

Why is that a reason to not worry? They can move at any time and one will most certainly die.
Also allelopathy is an issue.

Chemical warfare, make sure to run carbon in the tank 24/7 to soak up any toxins if there is chemical warfare going on. I personally would stick to one species of anemone in a tank.
fmfa0801
I run Chemi-Pure Elite and change it about every 1-2 months. 3-4g water changes weekly with heavy feeding. Change filter floss every 2-3 days.Im gona get rid of the sebae nem and stick with a bunch of RBTA in my 39g. when I switch over.

Try sticking with only two fish. BC14 have less than 14 gallons in the display area.
Bio-Reef
Can I just add 1 neon goby?
Bio-Reef
Bump?

You can do whatever you want... Don't just ask a question fishing for the answer you want (and just because someone gives you the answer you want still doesn't mean it's right for you..). If you really want another fish then just get one.

All I can say is that the 2 fish you already have is a good bioload for that tank. In other words it stands a good chance of being stable and successful long-term as long as you are reasonable in your tank maintenance. There are many BC14's with a similar fish selection that are doing quite well in the hands of advanced and inexperienced reef keepers alike.

On the other hand you could add more fish. There are people who have 3-4 fish in that size of a tank. Most of them are not successful long-term though. They keep the fish in the tank while they're small and then they transfer them into a bigger tank a few months later. Either that or they spend insane amounts of time each week in tank maintenance. Because without constant work and an excellent knowledge and experience, chances are the tank will probably crash and there will be a "Help, all my fish are dying!" thread here on nano-reef.

As a compromise, why don't you wait a few months and then decide. You'll know more and hopefully you'll be able to make a better decision.

You should not be giving advice on this considering you were asking the same exact question not even a month ago.

2 fish in a BC14 is a good, forgiving bioload IMO. Adding another small fish, like the neon goby you mentioned, is doable, but you've got to really stay on top of your maintenance.

Purple Firefish. Perfect lil nano fish, beautiful, peaceful.

Or a watchman goby, I have a yellow, and he's sick-tight. Maybe a pair of neon gobies?
lakshwadeep
A neon goby is possible, but you may want to try with an even smaller goby, like a Trimma or Eviota. You could actually keep a small group of then in a BC14, but the problem is that the resident fish are already near the limit of the tank's bioload. Also, you should consider getting a larger tank if you want more fish.

I asked "choose my third fish" a few months ago. I did NOT ask if I can add a third fish. So how am I giving bad advice???? All Ive said on this thread is that I have 2 Picassos, 1 pygmy angel and 1 mandarin with no bio load problems in my BioCube 14g. It works for MY tank so WTF are you all pissy about what I said?

+1mil. on Pistol/Goby combo, I found both for exactly thirty. I don't know how big of an Ahole your damsel is though as the more agression the goby feels would most likely cause it to come out less. I have nothing else in my 10gal right now so the Hi Fin and Pistol are out constantly.
