Can someone recommend me a good heater?

It will be for a 54 gal corner tank, and I will be running the heater in a 10-20 gal sump.

How many watts should I shoot for, and what brand has a good track record as far as reliability. I want something that will keep an accurate temp too (no huge temp swings).

Right now I've been using a Hydor Theo 150W heater on my 20H and it's been OK, but I do get the occasional temp spike. I've never been sure if this was from the heater, or if my lights heat up the water every once in a while.

the earth using geothermal!!!!

I have gone through two of the hydor thermometers and I will never buy one again. The temperature sensor is very random and I have to turn it all the way down to get my temp to stay at 80. I ended up switching. I don't know if they come in a big enough size, but the stealth titanium heater is awesome. I now have one on my frag tank and my temp swings are like .5 at the most. They are pricey but worth the money

I have a hydor theo, and it cooked my tank once already, spiked up to 94'F. I bought a cheap "topfin" heater from petsmart and it keeps 79'F way better than any heater I've had before.. for 50gal you probably want at least a 200w maybe more.

yeah i just had a hydor theo stop working on me tank dropped to 64 over night and when i checked it there was moisture inside

I have used ebo-jager exclusively for 15+ years. In fact, I have at least one from back then, and it's still working fine. I worked at a lfs for around 5 years, and I have never actually seen one malfunction or break, nor can I recall having heard any stories of any malfunctioning. I have never seen a spike as well. The only time I have ever seen the temp fluctuate by even a degree was when our house heater went out, and the house got down to 40f, the tank dropped from its steady 81 to 80, hehe. I froze my butt off, the fish were toasty warm biggrin.gif
A lfs by here has a few in their tanks that he said are around 15 years old, and they are still kicking strong. They are like mine, the old green style. I think the boxes on them now just say Jager.

I love my Stealth heaters that are a few years old. The new ones with the LED built in are now made in China. The ones I have and Marineland used to make came from Italy. Good news is they still have a lifetime warranty.

I have a Jager that I do not trust, it gets stuck in the "on' position. I only use that heater for water I prepare for water changes.

BTW-I recommend a 200 watt heater for your setup.

Well, you want about 4-5 watts per gallon for heaters. They are pretty cheap anyway. So, with that said, you are looking at about a 250 with the 10 gal sump and a 300 with the 20 gal sump. I like my theo heaters, but the suction cups suck (in general with all heaters) so get a mag clip for another 5 dollars. Also Won brothers makes good heaters, especially their titanium ones (use that on my freshwater)
Also I wouldn't recommend an electronic thermometer, because many people have boiled or frozen their tanks because of electrical failure. Most of the time the thermometer is the reason for the large temperature swings.

I would highly recommend the Azoo Titanium Electronic Heaters.

I would also go with a 300 watt if it were me.

I have to admit, that's pretty impressive.

How about a heater for a Fluval Edge 6gl. Any suggestions?

My hydor theo is driving my nuts as well.

How's the customer service with hydor? Will they replace it?

Why have people suggested a 200w heater, he has a 54g with another 20g. So around 75g, you'll need atleast a 300w heater.

Eheim heater or ebo jagar is the last heater you will buy. Forget all the fancy titanium digital whatever.

Check out the link above showing specs, he can easily get by with the 150w from Jager unless his tank is outdoors in Canada. tongue.gif
