I ordered it with the intention of bringing it with me on a short trip I am going on. After reading through a few pages, I read through a few more, and then before you knew it I had gone so far that I might as well finish it. I leave on Tuesday. smile.gif There are jokes mixed in, and it reads more like a conversation than a serious text about serious coral. I think that is great, because this is a hobby after all, and you don't want to read a book that feels like work.

The book covers lighting, filtration, coral color, placement, flow, pests, cures, qt, flood control, dosing, selection, acquisition, pricing etc... in a quick and handy reference. For the new coral keeper who doesn't want a coral farm, if you just replace the word "farm" with "your tank" in the book, you will get all the info you need; if you come prepared with a general idea of the cycle, parameters etc...Miguel doesn't have any filler, and you should understand the basics of how an aquarium works, because the book goes from there. It is about coral husbandry, not how to setup a fish tank. Makes it much easier to read if you have been in the hobby for more than a few months. Every page has something useful, and the tips and tricks section for each coral gives you more than the care info you receive in a product description. A quick and dirty guide to keep coral alive and looking its best. No rambling about "how this does that which doesn't matter b/c you can't see it without a microscope etc....", he gets to the point - efficiency, survival, color and growth.

The commercial aspects of the book are pretty spot on. Miguel doesn't tell you everything, but he certainly gives out more than he should..... smile.gif My one complaint is that I wish it were out 2 years ago....a few of those lessons we both learned the hard way. tongue.gif If you are thinking of starting a coral farm, it would be foolish of you to skip over this one.

John, do you have a man crush? J/K. You got me interested, and I will def look into this.

I didnt know they made man crushes these days. I will have to wikipedia that..... smile.gif

Book solved my xenia problem, could never get it to grow, now I know... with pictures no less....

I want to see the second edition, "How to grow coral in the ocean". I think he is involved with mariculture now... to me that seems like the future...big ocean out there, tons of real estate for coral farms, etc...

That is an odd thing, not being able to get xenia to grow. I have had a little too much success with elongata, but not so much with pom pom. I guess I will need to use that bookworm code for marinedepot.

i kept my salinity lower in that tank on purpose. never knew xenia was particular about a higher salinity.... but that is all you get for free.
