I think it happened to the anemone i bought. when i got it, it looked like this...

and now it looks like this (its been this color for over a year now)

the anemone is healthy, its under MH lights. i feed it silversides one every other week. it still have good reaction and it never moves.. i never really thought much of it til people started talking about bleaching and stuff. I asked the LFS and they said it may have been colored for sale.. make people believe you are getting a rare item when actually its an ugly ole white anemone. either way, i still like it.. its a good specimen. (at least i think..)
AMW
Yes, I have been told by multiple LFS owners that they are aware of anemone dying....often the bright yellow anemones.

They usually color them crazy bright colors, your original one looks pretty healthy/normal, and the 2nd one looks bleached.... One way to tell if the bottom of the foot is the same color as the head (cant check now) but I dont know how to tell 1 year later.

i dunno if this helps, but the foot has always been white. its still white. that never changed. so is my anemone bleached? or just its regular color now?

Its bleached, it released all of its zooxanthellae (a symbiotic algae that the anemone uses to gain nutrients from photosynthesis). Usually this is a sign of lack of lighting, but it also can happen under stressful water quality. That anemone looks like a sebae, which is notoriously bad for releasing its zooxanthellae during shipping.

How good is your water quality? When was the last time you changed your MH bulb?
Long story short, its unhealthy, it shouldnt look lilke that. The color it had when you bought it was how its supposed to look, or it could even be darker.

Start feeding it 2x-3x a week until it gets its color back, then feed it at least once per week.

you know i lost a couple corals due to bleaching after i changed my bulbs one time.. maybe that was it. i cant recall if that was about the time it started this or what. ill feed him more often, im due to get new bulbs for my MH next week. maybe that will help too. i am a bit smarter on changing my bulbs.. they told me a year, then everyone else tells me 7-8 mos. thats probably why i bleached the hell out of a lot of stuff. anyway, i got an idea to put some screen over my tank while they get used to the much powerful lightin thats coming next week. thanks for the help.

oh yeah, and the water quality is fine. calcium was 350 instead of 450-500 but otherwise ok.

Calcium wont mess with the anemone anyway, as long as the alk is within normal range. And yes good idea to light acclimate your corals and anemone to the new bulb. Bleaching can occur from TOO much light and not getting adjusted to it first.

but do you thnk it could stay bleached for a year after changing the bulbs? my spongodes turned white instead of green, and its growing like crazy.. too bad its ugly.. and white lol. but it never rebounded either.

IMO, yes it could stay bleached for a year. I bet you a dollar when you bump up your feedings he will begin to color up in the next 2-3 months (as long as your tank parameters are in check). Once every two weeks is stretching it for an anemone in captivity.

The thing with anemones though, if they are getting too much light they can hide from it, so it would be used to it by now. It just needs that extra nutrition boost to get its color back.

But like i said, this all depends on your water quality. SG, sg swings, temp, temp swings, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, PH, etc.
teajay33
well all of those things were in check 99% of the time. i noticed my heater went out for a span that im not sure of? could have been days could have been weeks. but i noticed the temp dropped to 72 degrees. i went out and got a new heater though, and its much nicer. the frogspawn acted funny during that time.. they were only coming out half way. its back to normal now though.ill try feeding him more though. see if that helps.. btw, should i put some of that seachem garlic additive stuff in the water when im unfreezing the silversides? think that would help?

Garlic really only makes the food more desireable to fish as far as i have seen. You can try soaking it in some selcon though for added nutrition. I dont add anything to my silversides i just feed them.
