I have made a battery auto top off. I all went well until i switched it on and it didnt have enough head power to pump water from a 2 lt juice bottle up 2 feet. I take it others have had this trouble. The question i need answered is , can i hook the float switch to a normal plug in pump. to get more head height. I dont think i can , the wires looks a little thin. What can i do. I have been searching the site to no avail. Who can help me please
Yes, but you should use a relay.
An MJ1200, which a little overkill for your needs, only draws about 200mA. It's not much - you only need a 30-something gauge wire to handle that (check your local code). 30 AWG wire is not much thicker than a human hair.
The problem is that even though the floatswitch is 'rated' for this much current (and likely voltage) every time the floatswitch shuts off the pump, there will be a small arc across the switch contacts. It has to do with the "type" of load that a pump is - I won't bore you with the detail unless you ask. Over time, this arcing and sparking will damage the contacts - likely welding them together and flooding your tank. This is why you should use a low-voltage 12V relay, as the coil of the relay is not large enough to damage the floatswitch. The relay contacts are in turn much more robust than the floatswitch, and will not be damaged by the pump.
This would be your ideal part[shameless plug] I just released two new PCBs for my automatic water changer, and it includes an automatic topoff as a part of the circuit. Link is in my signature. I recommend the latest - V5.1[/shameless plug]
