http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXEg6dH3dDI Little crab is 9 months old (at least)...Size of a quarter, very social, doesn't eat anything but live foods and left overs. Never harmed a coral or fish, Have any ideas on an id? I have checked every hh id website, referenced books, etc. Thanks!

He's one of 3 (we think) that came on the live rock we bought 8-9 months ago. I have been trying to id them for quite some time but I know with crabs it can be hard. He seems to host our acans and frogspawn....it's pretty amazing how social they are considering we didn't see them for more than a second or so up to about a month ago!

I know thats what threw me off the when i saw the video I've never seen such a bold crab before, if its trying to host something, it might be a acropora coral crab or something similar to it

I too thought maybe an acropora crab, but these crabs didn't start "hosting" anything until maybe 6 weeks ago. They were always in the rock crevices and holes. Now, no matter what time of day, I can find them in their little coral abodes. The one in the vid lives in our red acan, but steals meals from the suncorals. The other one's live under our frogspawn in the rocks. Our mandarin is more skiddish of my camera than the crabs!

That crab does have really nice coloration and seems really bold. I wish my hh crab would have been that nice. 3 snails and a firefish later and I had to take 10# of live rock out of my nano and go hunting. That one big claw does make me a little iffy on if its ok. Keep it fed and maybe it wont go looking for other things to eat in your tank. Great Video

It better not eat that mandarin or there will be hell to pay that cost me 29 dollars.

I think I may have his cousin! mine has red tipped claws, a bumpy blue/green body, and black and white legs, i think it's a mut.
I just bought a red sea 130D and i'm starting to transfer stock out of my 8g BC, but i'm holding off until I know this fella is safe for my corals.
He came in rock that I bought for the 130D, it was "Irian Jaya" rock(nice stuff if you can find it btw)

That crab is native to tide pools and marshes of the east coast. Guy I knew used to get hundreds of them.

It looks like a xanthid crab, which is not reef safe. Kurtl: it's unlikely a crab that came on rock from Irian Jaya, Indonesia, is native to the east coast of the US.

We are keeping him until trouble arises...He is so tame I can hand feed him now. He climbs on my pincers. I see no harm in letting him stay. Its been over 9 months and like I said, this crab is tame...and if you have a similar crab to mine, keep it fed and it shouldn't cause trouble. At least mine hasn't.

that looks a lot like the crab that the "Volcano Tank" guy has (SN is konolua).. he has a link on his page and you can search for him on here in the member tanks. (if you havent seen his tank, its bad ass!)
http://www.konolua.com/RSS/Volcano_Tank/Volcano_Tank.htmlthat crab looks like the one on the first page of his website. check it out
