Do you think I could keep a yellow head jawfish (or pearly jawfish) in a 2.5g to a 3g tank? I know that would be pushing it so Im just wondering. It would have a pretty deep sand bed.
Thanks!

I would say no, they need more room than that. Try a tang

What if the jawfish is small?

Nope jawfish grows to 4". If you want something that burrows, get a shirmp/goby pair. Or just a bullseye pistol, they grow to 2"

I would also say no. Even though they spend most of their time looking out of their hole, mine does swim around quite a bit. I have had mine for about 8 months and he is about 4". I would say that you would need a 3.5" sand bed, plus 8-10 inches vertical for him to swim and hover.

You could get away with a shallower sand bed by looking up the DIY jawfish house. (I think it was stoneywaters?) You'll still need the vertical clearance though.
