Full Version: Put Your Clam(s) On A Pedestal!

So...... You say you got a new clam from your LFS or a Group Buy (Rockfish)? You say..... "Man I wish there was a way to show off my new clams"! If you're like me..... You soon run out of real estate, no more live rock cause you have you're pretty corals on them. You don't want to put them on the sand bed. Or your clams won't stay put and they keep falling over.

Well........ Listen up! After a few months of bugging StevieT from inTank, he has made me a clam pedestal. Now this is not a "new" idea as fellow N-R member Calvin415 made these about 3 years ago. These are made of a round, clear acrylic.Mine is 2 1/2" in length, and these may come in different sizes. The clam pedestals are also hollow so you can fill these with whatever type of media you prefer, rubble or sand. You can also bury these to suit your liking. So far, my maxima is liking it just fine!

StevieT hasn't set any pricing on these as of yet, depends on demand!

So show off those clams with a pedestal from StevieT!!

MedicBMC
I want one of these for my new tank!

Is that a true cylinder or is it more oval shaped?
StevieT
Lol clown fish logo is upside down. I didn't expect you to actually show it but have it hidden in the sand.

They are round, not oval.

this is by far one of the coolest ideas i've seen in a long while even though I did see calvin do soemthing similar!!!

A really nice idea would be to have some thicker circles of flat acrylic to allow the clam to attach to and that you can then bury in the sand a little.
I know..I could use shells or what ever else but I don't have those handy near me.
I know my crocea has only been happy when he has himself buried in the sand. I put him to the rock and he has been moving cm by cm daily trying to get back to the sand. I would put him back to where he was, but don't want him attaching to the glass on the bottom of the tank.
So some Clam Coasters...would be an awsome idea.

This is something I was thinking about. My clam and a few other corals are attached to acrylic pieces then you just cover them up with sand and they are hidden.

I can mount acrylic on the top of the tube. let me know what you guys think are good ideas this is something that will be done for fun.

I can make short tubes with a flat top, totally hidden in the sand but a great mounting point for any clam.

I can make taller tubes with a flat top, "get ur clam off the ground"

I still want to get Calvin's ok before they go on the site. He had the original idea.

In the pic I posted, I have a clam shell for it to attach to. I wasn't sure if I wanted it directly on the sand.

Rockfish..... I figured you would want some of these, I can picture your clams on these, displayed at different heights. Now if we could get Jay-Sun, Guia-X and others on this. wink.gif

I would think a tube with an acrylic piece mounted 1/4" - 1/2" down inside the tube. Tube for support -- acrylic piece for attachment -- then you could fill the 1/4" - 1/2" of void space with sand/media after the clam attaches.
StevieT
No time to do that, too complex

U read my mind! I was thinking about the different height thing myself. That would look sweet IMO.

Just triple the cost of them, it will all work out then.

Depends. If I have to cut the plugs then yes, it would have to be so precise to be welded to the outer tube. I will keep the option open and see what parts are available to make it work. I'd love to take these to the laser but it would increase the cost.

isnt it just a piece of acrylic tube with a sticker on it? huh.gif

Sure is, but it serves a purpose and is shipped to your door without sourcing out acrylic and having the correct tools. Demand is demand.

Please tell me what would be a good general height range and design.

flat top? Plug in the middle? As is? I need to come up with 3-4 different ideas then I can source everything out, design it and activate it on the site. There can be height options/style to choose from on a pull down menu.

flat top def and i think how high really depends on what you wanna do with them.......bury them in the sand or leave them out in the open

i'd say 2-3 inches would be a standard with different sizes to follow

you're gonna have different lengths as well right??

Pretty cheap compared to the high price media baskets and other junk I shell out to you fools

If the top can be a flat piece of acrylic any length can be accommodated for. I would like to elimate 10+ different options. I have two clams, one large one small so I can base the need off them. I like mass production so I will have to think of a way to do it with these.

Is there really a need for different size tubes if the tops are flat? I can't see why

OK... we'll have to put a hold on this for now. When they are ready I will have them on the site. For now I don't have the materials and a final design to start producing these.

Not trying to threadjack here...

I seriously can't tell in this picture, if it is, does Aiptasia irritate clams or do they have some sort of defense against it? I've seen GSP literally overgrow aiptasia, so I'd be very interested to know if clams have some way of dealing with it on their own smile.gif

That looks pretty nice basser1 and Stevie. Some of my clams keep getting knocked over, so for a few weeks now I have been toying around with some ideas on placing my clams on something similar but with pvc and I have finally came up with something last night when I went to Lowes. I just literally finished it a few minutes ago and waiting for it to dry up. I don't know if it's okay to say what I did since Stevie will be making these and I don't want to take anything away from him. I don't know how it will work yet as I have not put it in the tank. I'll see in a half hour or so. If this doesn't work out, I may have to turn to Stevie and see what he comes up with.
