Here is my 6" rbta when fully expanded (deflated in the video). I will be chopping it into 4 pieces. Sorry my hands get in the way but you get the point. Here's how i do it.

1. sterolize all the tools in rubbing alcohol as well as my hands
2. remove and let anemone deflate
3. Place anemone on cutting board
4. make sure all the tentacles are out of the way of the cut so minimal damage can occur. In this video i chopped off some tentacles but it has not affected the healing process so far as i have done this before.
5. start your cut in the center of the mouth cutting outwards.
6. you will want to make sure you get a piece of the foot and the mouth on every cut so imagine a pizza pie.
7. After the cuts are made place in a breeder net with moserate flow and medium lighting
8. 3 weeks later 4 healthy anemones smile.gif

hi, why would you link me yo a maxi mini propagation. It has nothing to do with rbta propagation. I was just sharing.

Six months ago I was horrified by this proceedure. But after watching it done correctly and seeing the end results I may try it myself. To me the secret seems to be the recuperation period in isolation from the main tank. You should document it with pics, I would love to see that. Boy was I wrong to bash the person that purposed it to me. As long as it keeps collection of wild BTA down and lowers the price I am all for it. It needs to be mentioned that this does not work at all for other types of anemones besides minis as far as I know. Cool and good luck.

Wow, just wow...

thanks glenn i did this to my flame bubble tip and it has done great. went from 1 to 5 and and will keep on doing it. its always great to share info with others that will help promote the aquaculturing of species instead of going out and taking them from natural habitat

If one was to do this would you want to pre feed the anemone a few days in advance or start feeding after (if so how long etc)
MikeTR
Why not just make it a redneck xmas and chop up ur GBTAs too..wink.gif works the same way.

lol

mine closed up after 4 days so that was when i offered food but as stated from glenn i would not "gut load" it that close to fragging
GT AQUATICS
here is how they look today, 12 hours after propagation all inflated and attached cool huh:
this one climbed up the breeder net

there is 2 in these pics

and the 4th one chillin under the rbta that is bleached and recovering

THAT IS SO AWESOME!

I got mine and its huge right now, but its so firmly attached to a piece or LR that I doubt I’ll be able to do that. Any suggestions?
GT AQUATICS
as long as he is not in a hole it USUALLY can be effortless to remove them. Slow and steady. If he does not cooperate point a powerhead at him to get him to move to a spot where he is easily removable. One of my favorite tools is the rounded end of a ziptie. Bleieve it or not they work great and dont rip the nem
RayWhisperer
Ednangel,
I've used ice cubes with mixed results. All but one detached in under a minute.

As far as getting one that is firmly attached to split. Try feeding heavily for 2 to 3 weeks, then do a 50% water change. That was always a guaranteed way to trigger mine to split.
ericm1205
made me cring a little bit. wow it was cool though. my rbta is really healthy and pink and is huge at 9" in my 24g nano.

if i did this to mine, i would just split it into 2 so it wold be like 4"
dod you put it in a different tank? if so if i did this and put it in my 40b frag tank, would my zoa's be ok in there? or would i be wise to start another tank to do this? in my frag tank i got like 70 frags and i would die if i lost my red and purple hornets and other cool stuff i have.

GT AQUATICS
i put the anemone into the same tank because it was established in that water. I have alot of rare corals in there like my darth maul chalice, red hornets, putple hornets, etc... and they dont have any effect at all and they are perfectly fine.
GT AQUATICS
wow these little propagated nems are moving all over the place. Wierd for a nem with 1/4 of a mouth and 1/4 of a foot

you got me inspired, first I'll direct the powerhead straight to the Nem to see if it starts moving away from the hole she parapeted herself. Once I get her out of there I'll place it in a breeding basket in preparation for fragging. It is so huge right now it feels right to do this.

Wish me luck,
GT AQUATICS
how long has the anemone been established in your system?
Pickle010
I have a question...

Whenever I see nems that have been propagated by cutting them It seems they always have white marks in the center - or along the body - I don't know if that is a result of the propagation or if it is just a natural unrelated occurence.

It has been in captivity for the past 2 years, I bought from a fellow reefer who sold me all his stuff. I then transferred it to my 25 gal Solana under MH three months ago and from that point on it just has grow and grow more.

i have not seen this with mine. Mine usually start off with the white before propagation. It very well could be a result of the cut but im not sure

the reason i ask, is that some critters that have been established in a tank for multiple years do not do well when fragging. I have gad toadstools for 5 years and then chopped a small piece off and kaput. I dont know if anemones would react that way but i wouldnt take a chance. Since he has been in his new home for 3 months you should be good.

I challenge one of you to take one of your green frags and bundle it with one of your red frags during healing and see what happens.
GT AQUATICS
sounds tempting
GT AQUATICS
they are all doing excellently right now. They stopped moving and now they are starting to heal. 2 more weeks and they will be available to eat
RockinSmall
i have a lovely condy getting really large, u suppose i can cut this in half and have success?
nemmy
I did it to a green bta with success. Im too scared to cut my dinner plate sized rose (you cant buy them around here).

I only cut it in half though, not quarters.

mine has these white streaks near the mouth. mine was never fragged, but it was a clone i bought from a fellow reefer. it was 4" when i got it and 8mo lagter its over 8".

for reference the snow clown is about 1.5in and the pygmy angel is 2"
