Hmm, just cycling and am realizing that no matter what ( Replacing impellers, shafts, cleaning.) that my ac110 motor noise is too much for a bedroom. Is there anything wrong with turning the ac110 off during bedtime? I'm running a 17g long with a koralia 1 and the ac110. I ok with the noise of the koralia at night, just the 110 buzz is no go. What do you folks think? Thanks!

Get a new pump? What pump do you have on it? I have an AC110 and it doesnt buzz.

Shouldn't be a problem. Most wavemakers have a night mode to cut the flow in half at night. As long as you have some flow, which you do with the Koralia, then you should be fine with a nighly flow redux.

I think it depends on what you're using the ac110 for. Is it strictly just a pump, or are/will you, be using it as a refugium? If I'm not mistaken, if you plan on putting chaeto in the 110, wouldn't you have to keep it running over night so the chaeto does it's job? This is what i'm planning on doing with my ac110, but if it's not necessary to keep the pump on at night if it's a refugium, then I rather turn it off. Not because it's hard to fall asleep, but i find the noise soothing and it makes it hard to wake up in the morning!

I wouldnt see a problem with it. My skimmer sometimes gurgles too loud for me at night so I unplug it. I kick it back on when I wake up though and I havent seen any ill effects. (but then again i keep my Korialas and AC70 running as well)

If you quit messing with the motor and let it break in it will be pretty much silent in a couple weeks or a month.

Like the last member suggested let the pump bed in or get a new one.

Im fairly new to this hobby my self but a bit of advise I was given and I think is logical and makes perfect sense -

''When your stood in the sea day or night you cant stand still because of the water flow and tides''

As your trying to replicate this enviroment i dont think the water flow should be altered at night.

I plant on putting cheato, slowing the flow down a bit, and using it as a fuge once the cycle finishes.

Does cheato need to be to have 24hr flow???

As for wearing it in. I bought it used, and the impeller rattled like crazy, so I replaced the parts. Now I'm sure that its just the motor humm that bothers me, NOT the water. If that was all the sound I could hear, then I would leave it on like my other AC70.

As for mimicking the reef environment, I would imagine that sometimes the ocean has high current, and sometimes low. Maybe my tank has a storm during the day, and calm seas at night? ninja.gif Makes sense?

Chaetomorpha needs at least some type of flow.

You also have to consider that the flow rates even when your lights are on are not nearly as strong as what happens in the ocean.

Any science on whether the uptake of nitrates by cheato is decreased drastically when water only flows 15 hours a day? Would it be 15/24th (62.5%) of 100% ? Hmm . . . . this might be getting silly.

is the 110 a return pump or just for flow in your tank. If its for return you probably shouldnt turn it off. if its just for flow tan its probably no big deal.

I don't think there'd be any uptake of nitrates after lights out. I'm guessing no photosynthesis = no nitrate removal.. not based on any scientific evidence, just hypothetical so nitrogen fixing is not reduced..

I know ALL my AC filters that Ive used over time would buzz sometimes, I would just tap hard on the top and it usually goes away. Not sure if that helps. Right now I have a 110 fuge on my 20L and its not super loud but I prolly wouldnt put it in my bedroom. Im a light sleeper too smile.gif
