what can i replace for the sponge, ceramic rings , and active carbon?

Full Version: filteration media for 28g nano cube!
I'd keep the carbon and the sponge, dump the ceramic rings. Some swap the sponge to the bottom, the carbon in the middle, and then poly filter/ filter floss on the top.
I've got the HQI and once I swapped to the above, it was much easier to clean, and I also had less crap accumulating in the bottom.
Some folks even remove the entire media tray and use that as a fuge.

Definitely you want to get rid of the ceramic rings. Your live rock and live sand serve the purpose of the rings but do a much better job of it. I'd also lose the sponge and replace with filter floss. IMO it does a much better job of filtering the particles out of the water. Last, after you've had your carbon for a couple months I'd replace it with chemi-pure elite.
In summary, I'd go filter floss in top and chemi-pure in the bottom. If you decide to run some chaeto, that could go in the middle.

switch it out for Filter floss you can use pillow stuffing from wal-mart.
Take out the rings and put some Chemi-pure elite in there,
remove the carbon and replace it with purigen.

The chemi-pure elite does the same thing as the purigen. So you could get away with running just the cheim-pure elite and either leave the other chamber open of run something else.
