Are these all mummy eyes?
How can you tell if it is?
They all have red eyes, with a tissue color that ranges from green to blue, but what feature distiguishes them as mummy eyes?

Thanks.

Green with orange eye, I'm pretty sure. +2 is from Reefpets' e-bay auctions. I won it SUCKA!

the 'feature' that distinguishes them is the hobbyist who decides to add the moniker. 'mummy eye' is not a species or classification, but an arbitrary name given to a random color morph to increase its resale value. it's a morph, mind you, that will look ten different ways in ten different tanks, same with any coral.

so, pick whichever morph you like best and call it a mummy eye. no one will come banging on your door telling you you're wrong, since there is no standard with trade names.

Ahh but I will. A mummy eye chalice is one that is green with orange eyes. If you say "I have a green with orange eye chalice for sale", or "mummy eye" people will automatically know what a mummy eye is. I can justify naming extremely nice coral. People don't name nice frogspawns or torches but they go for alot. It's just not cool when they jack up the price ONLY because they named it.

I had absolutely no idea what a mummy eye chalice was until I opened this thread. all four chalices pictured are incredible morphs, and I would gladly pay fair price for colonies of any of them - but I wouldn't pay more for one called a mummy eye, especially since the colors will probably shift and look completely different in either of my tanks.

the names are arbitrary, whether you want them to be or not.

I wouldn't pay any more for a orange eye green chalice than the same chalice named a mummy eye. But if somebody is trying to sell coral for a living, they can sell it as a mummy eye and whoever wants a mummy eye can use google to find one, etc. instead of "orange eye green chalice".

And when it gets to four colors, it gets hectic.

I am in this situation myself. I am typically not a name person. I rarely throw names out there in my sales thread as I think the coral speaks for itself. However, I just paid a pretty good amount for a large chalice colony that has the coloration of a mummy eye. I did not buy it with specific lineage etc. etc. I do know that these trade names are exactly that, trade names. When I frag this thing I will experiment by just posting a pic and see if that changes the interest.

On a side note 2, 3, and 4 have been coming in as colonies soooooo much lately that I'm surprised frags prices aren't down to like $20 for multiple polyps on those by now...
