Old, used Velbon HE-3 without a ballhead at all. Holds the camera steady, allows me to aim it where I want....sounds like it works fine for all its needed features to me....free from an old friend....
I guess I just don't see the need to spend a freakin fortune to have a camera held steady....

i agree that tripods are damn spendy, but i too just drop almost 500 on a nice one with a ball head and carrying case.
but you get what you pay for i reckon, had a cheaper tripod but it wasnt up to doing anymore then a small point and shoot *of course i was assured that it would work no issues handling the Xsi but that was a lie*
spend the money once get something quality and it will last a lifetime!

I was looking for boom arms today for mine. Can't seem to find anything that I like though. Would like to spend less than 150 though. I am also ordering a remote shutter both wired and wireless romotes.

put a square dslr or a a regular w/ grip on there plus a 300/2.8 on a hill to take a pic of a distant elk in the wind at dawn and report back with the results

you dont need to spend a TON...this is what i use
http://www.amvona.com/shop?page=shop.produ...;category_id=95they dont list the pan head anymore since mine is a few years old..I paid 80bucks shipped off their ebay store.
Its a tank it would hold my old 1DMarkII and Sigma 50-500 thats a total of close to 8lbs and it wouldnt move one bit and was as sturdy as a rock.

a lot of the cost of my rig is due to its weight - legs + head = 3.5 lbs
i climb mountains. i don't need to carry any more weight with me, so that was a huge factor

ok, that's kinda gross, and not just in an I-don't-like-vajayjay way.
Nice combo for the size and weight; I used to shoot with that combo.
I use this ballhead now.
