Just thought I would share a tip for the media basket. I've got a Biocube 29 with stock return pump.

I have a bag of Chemi-Pure in the lower chamber (Purigen in the middle and floss on top) and was noticing that the water level was always right at the top of the basket or overflowing the sides of the top of the basket. I took a zip tie and put around the middle of the Chemi-Pure bag (now it's looks like two smaller bags sitting on top of each other) and the flow is great. The water level in the top basket is about 1/4" below the side. I'm sure I could increase the return pump size and it would be fine.

Another thing you can do is pick the bag off the bottom of the shelf with a zip tie and tie it to the middle shelf. The CP bag is so large that it blocks some flow.

I like your idea though, will use it in the future.
