Looking into buying my first DSLR and don't know what to buy. Don't think I will ever use the Video function of the 7D, just have never been that into video. Know the 7D has more autofocus points and more ISO funtions, but as an amateur do I need this. Like the price point and features of the 50D, but just want to make sre I am getting the right camera for me. I am not convinced that I will need the higher end features of the 7D. I like that the 50D still has preset options to choose from like portrait, landscape etc... What are you guy's thoughts on these two camera's? Is the 7D worth the extra 500 for an amateur? Than for the help!

Quick answer is the 50D would serve you just fine. I could list all the bells and whistles the 7D has that the 50D lacks. But ive owned both and they are almost identical in image quality to about ISO 1600. So if you have no need for the extra focus points and features the 50D is more than enough camera for even a seasoned amateur.

go with the 50D..it will do way more then you need it to and a LONG way to grow into. Its a good bit cheaper and I dont think you have a real need to dive into the specs of what the 7D can do if your just starting out.

Talked to a pro photographer I met today taking pictures of some machinery and he said that the 50D would be great for me. I am convinced that this is the one for me. Costo has the package with the body, Canon EF 28-135mm IS Lens and 2 gb cf card for 1179. they also have one that comes with the body a Canon EF 28-135mm IS Lens a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and a 2 gb cf card for 1699. think i will get the one lens for now though, that extra 500 would be better put towards another lens down the road.

That's a great deal. I think together my 40D and my 28-135 ran me about $1k and that was only about 4 months ago. Now that I think about it, maybe I got ripped off

Yes another Canon user!
You couldn't go wrong with either selection there, 50D and 7D are both nice.
Sounds like they got you the right camera for your needs.

the 50D lacks video..it has Micro adjustment, faster FPS, larger buffer, much better build and ergonomics. Not sure how the new rebels do in noise compared to the 50D so i cant compare that. the 50D has a better AF as well. all points are cross type at 5.6 and faster and the center becomes cross and diagonal sensitive at 2.8 and faster lenses

The 50d is also bigger, go to a camera store and see which you like better. I personally can't stand the new rebels because my hand is too big for them. Give me a original rebel 300d or xxd with a battery grip any day!

t2i has 9 af points only center is cross, 7d has 19 all cross type. also. 7d is also 8fps compaired to 3.7. So they seem diffrent to me. but it is alf the price. Still interested in the 50D. Just want to know is will it take better stills than the t2i and t1i.

no I mean 30D..if you took same pics between the two I will doubt you could tell the difference. AF is about the same..the new rebels might be a little better in High ISO then the 30D but hell I would say at lower ISO you couldnt tell a shot difference between my 1DIII vs a Rebel..as long as it wasnt a difficult shot to take.

About the same time and price I payed for mine, however im in canada where things tend to be a bit more expensive regardless of exchange rate. I also got a bag , a memory card, a spare battery. Its more then payed for it's self as i had someone use it for my wedding. It was also the 17-85 mm usm is lens which i enjoy.
Added a wireless shutter a 430 ex a 50 mm prime, a polarized filter. And im sitting around 1600 invested. which was still less the the 50d new.
