Almost anything can be converted into a refugium as long as you get rid of the bioballs, have a slow water flow through the area, have an intake and return, and have some areas for life (ie: Copepods) to cling onto and not get swept immediately through the system into the display!

I would not recommend that as a refugium since the pump will be in the same chamber as your macro algae

If its acrylic, you can just cut a hole in one side, and add another chamber. I did it to the wet/dry that came with my 100g, and it works fine.
