They are still out and about this morning. I didn't add them to the 120g. They are TINY. They would fly right through the slots of my overflow. I need to put some netting up.
I added them to my "legacy" seahorse/pipefish tank.

Can I see pics of your Legacy tank?

It's ugly... I don't even have real lights over it anymore because I sold it.. in anticipation of moving to the 120g. I'll get a pic tonight.
The Janns seem to like the darkness.. they don't move out the lighted areas much.

I never knew pipefish were nocturnal.

You can barely see its head. Both splendid garden eels are alive and poking their heads out.. once in a while.

FTS. You can see the "shelf" i made to hold back the sand for the garden eels. Unfortunately, only 1 is in there.

There's an emtpy clam with green zoas on the lid, green star polyps glued to the overflow box and a gorgonia frag on the left.

I added a tank-bred sunrise dotty back. It's actually really cool. He hides in the empty clam and pokes his head out.
However, I have a tinge of regret.. I think he might eat my sexy shrimps. Anyone out there have those guys?
animalmaster6
Apr 25 2010, 11:49 AM
I see the garden eel!!!!

I have not owned one but dottybacks can be super aggressive! I don't think it's safe with seahorses, pipefish, and maybe even garden eels. :/

Apr 25 2010, 12:43 PM
Hmm.. Might have to retink that one then. He doesn't seem to be messing with the garden eels so far. He can probably go into my 180g. I have a tang that will put him in his place

Apr 26 2010, 01:42 PM
How many other tanks do you have?
jiriki76
Apr 28 2010, 10:20 PM
180g w/ 100g sump/frag tank
10g copepod culture
biocube 29g
29g legacy pipefish tank
120g semi-planted tank
I think I need another.

I know. I have been...
Been too busy... But I did get new additions:
2x Purple firefish
Another pom pom crab.. I have two total
2x Janns Pipefish
2x spotted garden eels
2x splendid garden eels are currently on hold at the LFS
The Sunrise dottyback leaves most things alone except for the firefish. He was aggressive but seems to be okay with them now.

The tank is definetly coming together.
The new additions sound sweet!

I'm working on it. Tank is looking a little crappy. Algae has gone a bit crazy. My cleanup crew isn't big enough so I am looking around for possibly a blue spotted seahare.
Of course, that comes with the caveat... It may eat my macro. So... to the 180g it goes if it mows down my macro.
I kinda like having two tanks.

I also added a Rainfordi goby. It came from the legacy seahorse tank.
I have a bunch of corals I need to sell. After transferring all the corals over to the 120g so I can break down the 29g seahorse, my sandbed is just a trail of misc soft corals.

Why not talk to John @ ReefCleaners?

I just got a blue spotted seahare

He rocks. Mowing down hair algae the second he hit the glass.
I picked up an ORA Boreallis colony too for the 180g.
Yeah I know.. you want pics... I'll take some tomorrow.

If they get chopped up by a powerhead or left to die.. there's a possibility.
This one has quadrupled in size.. i'm not kidding.

Sweet gorg and blenny!!
That garden eel has crazy coloration, he's awesome! What's he eating?
jiriki76
Jun 14 2010, 01:18 PM
I am feeding the tank half cyclopeeze and half nutramar ova. I believe they are mostly feeding on cyclopeeze. The janns pipe appear to be eating the nutramar ova.
I have been adding in mysis for the blenny.
animalmaster6
Jun 14 2010, 01:49 PM
What's nutramar ova?
jiriki76
Jun 14 2010, 02:30 PM
Nutramar Ova is frozen prawn eggs. Ultra tiny. Smaller than DI resin beads even. Sort of a light orange color.
I got mine from saltycritter.com.

Reefhotspot appears to be the only online retailer I can find which sells alligator pipefish.... They aren't cheap from them either.
I implemented a new water changing system on my 180g.
2x Aqua medic sp3000's - 50mL per hour
One to pull water from the 45g Brute can full of fresh saltwater and dump it into the sump. Another to pull from the sump and dump it into a QT tank which has a bulkhead to drain out to a sink.
The pumps run for 13 minutes once an hour. If I remember the time correctly, I should be changing out roughly 10% of the water once a week. 40% once a month.
Once every 3 weeks, I would need to refill the brute can and mix up a new batch.
I have a third pump but the sump for the 120g is a bit far away. I will pump the 180g into the 120g and then again from the 120g to the QT tank.
Pros:
-I can be lazy about water changes
-No shock to any of the systems
-I can maintain a different temperature zone for each tank
-I can definitely eliminate the skimmer on the 120g
-No more heater for the brute can
-QT does not have to be maintained separately
-Whatever alk/calc/Mg levels are maintained in the 180g, should translate to the 120g... which has much much lower alk/calc/Mg requirements due to very few hard corals and a few calcium based plants.
Cons:
-Pumps aren't cheap @$100 each brand new
-Replacement tubings aren't cheap either @ $25 per tube - lasts 4 to 5 months
-Salinity might drift but will require monitoring
-In reality, the amount of water being changed out per day is so low.. the salinity change would take days if not weeks to make a significant impact.. at least at 220g water volume levels
-QT salinity may drift because there's no ATO.. something to monitor
