are any of those sky pics taken by hand? i
I used a tripod for all of the night ones. 10-20 second exposures, depending on how light it was.

missing something though. contrast maybe?
I'd lighten the darks up a little more if I had remembered to put my camera in raw  . Too noisy to make it any lighter than that, but I think it's the darkness of the shadows that's the problem.

Did you mention what you were shooting with?
No, but here:
Nikon d40 body. Lens - AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8D -edit: I also used the kit lens (18-55) for a few photos-
Manual setting, f/1.8-5.6, shutter speed 10-20 seconds, both depending on how dark it was (these were taken at dusk, so it was rapidly getting darker as I was shooting)
I finally got to go back down to the beach this past weekend, and the weather was spectacular. El niņo sucks for the east coast, but here it's mid 50's (and supposed to hit sixty this week) and pretty sunny. All the flowers are blooming already! So yeah, no cool night shots, (I was too lazy) but I took a few daytime shots on our hike.
