Full Version: Building a salt pond?

Okay, so I've been thinking of science projects for this year, and I'm thinking of doing something with bimac octo's, which need quite a bit of space. I'm going to need probably 6 octos, each of which would require a 40 gallon tank. Rather than buying that many tanks ($$$$) I was thinking of either buying a plastic pre formed pond liner, or making something with the more typical (also more fragile scarry01.gif ) sheet plastic pond liner. Then dividing it up into six sections (this could be tricky, octo's can squeeze through really tight spots).

I don't know much about pond liners though - are they salt-safe? do I need to worry about chemicals leaching into the water? Also, I found a simple rectangular 105 gallon pre formed pond liner online, and it was $575, which is exactly the same as your typical 105 gallon glass aquarium. So am I even going to save any money doing this?

Anyone with experience in this area or general words of wisdom? Thanks in advance,

-Jamie

What you need to do is look into your local farmer supply store. They will be able to set you up with a poly watering trough. These things are not that much $$$$ and you can mod the heck outta them with baffles, dividers and such. You can get them in the typical circular type or some that are like 2' x 2' x 8'.
