Jan 3 2010 my clowns decided to TRY and lay eggs. I have had the onyx female for over a year now and she has been with the male platinum since june 26 2009. After being moved to 5 or so different tanks they finally settled in their last home, a 29 gal bc.
Late in the afternoon 1/3/2010 i see the male and female cleaning intensely. I mean really going to town. I said to my wife " they are going to lay eggs either tonight or tomorrow" Well 2 hours later right before the daylights kicked off they started "TRYING" to lay eggs. The male (platinum) had absolutely no idea what he was doing. He was going after the female as she attempted to lay the eggs. He was trying to suck out the eggs from her egg depositor. I found it funny.
After about 30 minutes, the female just gave up. No eggs, but she went through the actions as any egg laying female would.
We will give it a few months before they get the hang of it. I'll update as i go and they progress
Here are a couple pics i got of them

lol, maybe he was in the mood for some caviar

certainly is a interesting experience though, can't wait to see what the offspring would look like if they are successful at laying a nice batch of eggs for you.

Question if I may, when you place the clay pot in there, is it up on an angle with the bottom pointed down a little, or do you have it just sitting on it's side?
I ask because my female clown has finally taken to hosting an elegance coral and she is trying to encourage the larger male in the tank to do the same and I would like to see if adding a pot would help socialize them to it for an egg laying spot.

the pot is on its side, like a cave. I suggest you find something different for your clown to host. Some clowns can be very aggressive towards their host and can unknowingly damage it. Thats whan they host corals not anemones.

Let me know when they start breeding..
I love true percs and am a sucker for onyxs. My pair of true percs have been with me for 3 years now, and the male was only able to sleep in the anemone 6 months ago! (The femial had the RBTA all to herself for 2.5 years till it split multiple times and finally had room for the male too). Mine's never spawn because I only feed sparingly. What do you feed them and how fat they are?
GT AQUATICS
Jan 6 2010, 11:01 PM
i feed a homemade food mix, basically a ton of meat and veggies. I feed to saturation 3 times a day and do water changes every 3 days

ok so lets make this interesting. Guess the lay date and hopefully the male wont eat the eggs.
Whoever guesses the date i will guarantee a free picasso or platinum from the first successfully raised batch (i have raised over 10,000 clowns with over 95% success rates). Since they are not on a schedule it should be quite interesting.
Here's how it will work. Just post up a date you think they will lay. I will give you a hint to help everyone out. They attempted to lay jan 3rd. so give them (hypothetically) 7 days for the eggs to hatch and 7 days to lay eggs again. That brings the lay date to jan 17th. Remember that they are not on a schedule so its inevitable.
if there is multiple names on the laying date i will draw a name from a hat and the winner will receive a free clown shipping included unless you are in the sticks and ups says $100 for shipping.
my prediction is jan 20th just for $hits and giggles

Thanks for the info, I am gonna get one just a wee bit bigger than I currently have and put it in there..
I read somewhere that they can be rather rough when hosting.
So far so good though. I have been keeping an eye on her a lot and she seems to wait until he is fully expanded before doing into it, and when she does, she usually goes for a flap. She mostly undulates around it, or rubs her side up against it, and very rarely shakes her tail roughly in it.
I have to say though, that the elegance has seemed better at night with her in it. It doesn't deflate all the way any more.
But I am definately gonna take your advice to heart.
I can't wait to see of your babies. I wonder what they are gonna turn out like.

it really depends on their diet, water quality, experience, and age. When they first start out laying eggs it will be around 100-200. As they lay more nests they will lay more and more eggs. As they get older they will add more eggs to the nest. On average a healthy true perc will average 1000-1500 eggs. Some will lay more some will lay less
