I am going to get a rock anemone. I have been trying to find the lighting requirements as well as feeding that needs to be done. They arent pretty but I like them. Can someone help me or point me in the right direction?
Pickle010
Very hardy nems... med flow / med lighting.

Try searching "Flower Anemone" = same thing.
icsd71
Thanks pickle010 will do some searching.
icsd71
Ok this is what I found.

The Rock Flower Anemone is a carnivore, requiring meaty foods to survive. Offer mussels and freshly chopped fish, as well as a high quality frozen carnivore preparation. To thrive, the Rock Flower Anemone will need iodine and trace elements added to the water.

With that said what does everyone else use to feed there Anemone?
Lepomis
I feed mine off and on. I can tell no differences between when I was feeding it and not. Very hardy and mine hasn't moved in probably 2.5 years. It doesn't extend as much as it used to but that is from the tomato clown that it hosts. I had more problems when I feed it do to cleaner shrimp would pick at it constantly around the mouth.

icsd71
cool pic. The one I am getting is white in color. What is the preferred meat to give them?
yardboy
I've fed mine krill, mysis, silversides, flake food, and mostly nothing. I've had it for over three years, still doing fine and it has never moved. I've kept it under PC's, and now for the last several years T-5's. One of my favorite anemones. It's been hosting a Periclemenes for over a year.

Lepomis. Cool username, maybe not completely appropriate for a saltwater forum! I grew up catching and eating Lepomis macrochirus. Still my favorite, thhough I'm paranoid about bones.
Pickle010
I feed mine whatever the rest of the tank and what the other anems are getting - Silversides / Krill
icsd71
Thanks guys for the info. Also those are beautiful.
icsd71
Went ahead and got it. Darn thing moved 6 inches the first night to find him a spot next to the rock and has been there since. he is not as colorful as the ones above but he is just fine with me.

When he settles I doubt he'll ever move again. After awhile, get you a Periclemenes brevicarpalis. The will bond. It's cool watching them go through their "courtship", those shrimps are pretty clever about making the anemone at ease.

My rock anenome is doing well. When I got him he was bleached. Pure white. I have been feeding him regulary and giving him iodine and he is getting his color back. Looks awesome and healthy! He is my favorite part of the tank so far!
yardboy
Great! Don't forget about that shrimp buddy. It'll be a fascinating observational experience for you to see their relationship develop.
scubasteve2580
yall's look really cool. mine looks like a giant aptasia with hot pink and red tentacles. whats up with that???
yardboy
Show a pic and we'll see what it is. Rock anemones don't have much of a column to speak of. Their crown lays flat on the substrate.
icsd71
Plan on getting a shrimp for it. I will post a photo of the anenome later today.
icsd71
Here is apic one month after getting him.
yardboy
Deinitely a Flower, Epicystis crucifer. Not a particularly bright specimen, but healthy looking.
icsd71
Now the bugger has moved. he has gone about a foot worth of traviling in a half day! Do not know why he is moving. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.
icsd71
He has moved under the back side of a large piece of live rock. He isnt going to get a lot of light. But he is still there. I wonder why he has moved out of the light?
darcurr
if you decide to get the periclemens, you could go with the carribean variety

Little more color + cool factor for one off from everyone else!

Man my rock anenome has grown! he is almost twice his size when I got him. I am wondering if he will split soon?
SbCaes
these dont tend to split, but reproduce sexually. =)

jeremai
I've never seen or heard of one splitting, but there's a first time for everything. good luck. smile.gif
icsd71
Here is a pic of the anenome now!
icsd71
Now my Rock Nem has moved another foot upwards in the tank. This guy just does not know what he wants!
yardboy
He wants full sun. In the above pic there's a shady spot right on top of him. No wonder he moved. In the wild they live in the shallows fully exposed.
willyboy
He sure has gotten darker since the first picture. Nice nem smile.gif
icsd71
Thanks willyboy. He has come a long way since I got him. Here he is in the new spot.
hahaximmaxfish
How big do these guys get? Thriving tank size?
icsd71
I hope not much bigger. I will have to move him to a bigger tank if he does.
zook
Depending on the species, these anemones do get quite big, I've been one that is a good 8" in diameter. I have three in tank and it's weird, but feeding doesn't correlates to growth for me. The green is growing the fastest, but I only feed the red in hoping to get it a little larger.

I was thinking about getting one for a 25g cube. I dont think I will.
icsd71
wish mine would get a nice color like yours! Mine is rusty brown.....
yardboy
I've got one in a 20L and it's only about 3" in diameter. I feed it, but it isn't growing fast.
Where in the world did you get such colors in a rock anemone!
icsd71
yah really! I have seen several at the LFS and they are all white.
icsd71
My Nem has now turned Dark Purple..... maybe he is getting some nice color started.
icsd71
I have finally gotten an anenome shrimp. The 2 look great together.
ajmckay
Nice 'nem. I'm glad it's doing well.

I did notice that you have been dosing iodine. I just wanted to urge you to use caution when dosing anything in your tank. Seems many sources advise aquarists to dose iodine. The hard part is that it's difficult to tell just how much iodine/iodide is in a system.

Anyways, you should consider reading up on the topic a little bit sometime and then make a decision on whether you think it's a good move or not. There could be plenty of iodine in your tank already.

Good luck.
icsd71
how can you tell i was using iodine?

I think this might have given it away.
icsd71
Ok i missed that one. Sry.
zemuss
Where did you get your Nem? And where did the other guy get that green Rock Nem? That look awesome!
icsd71
Mine came from my LFS. Not sure on the colorful ones.
icsd71
Since I have gotten an anenome shrimp my Rock nem has calmed way down. He is more relaxed. Strange but it is true. I cannot beleive how much of a diffrence this has made.
yardboy
He's not all alone any more, tongue.gif plus the shrimp is probably feeding him!
zemuss
How big of a nem do you need for a Nem Shrimp?
icsd71
Im not sure. Everyone that i have seen is with a 3 to 4 inch diameter nem.
m05tw4nt3d
looks really good man, could we have a pic with the shrimp in it
