Full Version: Time to start a frag tank?

I have no less than three empty 10 gallon aquariums laying around, a coralife superskimmer 65, some powerheads, and a 24" lunar aqualight by coralife. Is this enough to get started? I just did some fragging some colonies in my display and now I have like 20 frags all over the place. Hopefully I can sell them soon, but it's looking like they will go to the lfs for store credit. dry.gif

you can start a frag tank if you have enough space and a light for it.

what im thinking for your 3 tanks is link them up together. have a siphon tube (something like the clear u tubes from overflow boxes) linking 2 tanks. a pump on one tank which pumps water back to the first tank. have a light thats long enough to light all 3 tanks.

heres a picture example

I would link them and I would use one as a fuge sump with lots of macro, one with purely LR and the last for frags only. There are a ton of possibilities and it seems that you have enough to get going.

It'll get you started. Just put corals, and no other livestock, and you might not even need the skimmer. Depending on corals, you might want to run carbon too.

Then, after a while, you'll want bigger & better tongue.gif I'm putting a 50g frag tank & 100g sump rubbermaid stock tanks in the basement, and will probably hook up a used 29g for macro algae fuge.

Imagine in your mind what happens when one of those tubes clogs or breaks siphon.

i dont see that as a problem. its a frag tank, there shouldnt be anything other than frags in the tank. i dont see something 3/4"-1" debris floating around getting caught in the tube.

ive seen countless LFS did that with their tanks. works fine
