Hello i have 28g HQI nano cube, which is stocked with live rock a few corals and some fish.

Ia also have Vortech MP10 , Chiller 1/10 Artica with MJ 1200 on the back , Coral Life UV Sterilizer .

Here is my problem , about 2 month ago i use to put powder calcium and magnesium in the back chambers directly, somehow i believe it is still there sinde not much movement in the bottom part. Then i notice that every time the pumps go on they make the water like full of powder or dust for over 2 months. I need to now how to avoid this or remove this i have done water changes but it keeps coming up. I was thinking of doig a water change and also clean with a wet vac the bac chamber to elminate all the particles that are in the bottom of the chamber. When i look down i see like powder all over the back chambers. I am using the original sponge but have floss which i can use. The MP 10 hels to move around all the dust all over the place. How much water should i change? Why when i turn the two pumps at the same time water goes over the filter sponge? Any help is greatly appreciated. Should i change for the floss.

I must be missing something, you put calcium and magnesium powder in the back chamber of your JBJ? There must be something about this type of dosing I have never heard of. Please don't try to syphon it out because if you swallow any of it you could become very sick. Still can not wrap my mind around why?

i am new to this the guy in my LFS told me to dump the powder in the chambers weekly he never told me to mix it before. Is a newbie errror. I was using Tropi marine calcium in powder form. I will not syphon it i was thinking of using a a shop vac wet/dry for the back and clean it with fresh water and keep vacumm in it until i remove the particles. After that i will do a water change, how much should i remove. Do you normally mix the powder first with water? I am going to start using liquid form for the future.

Everybody has a story about being new to SW. First rule research before ever listening to your LFS. You should not need to be dosing anything right now. I would just do water changes every day say 10 percent for a week. Let the tank sit with new SW in it for a month and then test for Calcium, Magnesium, Alkalinity and Specifc gravity. Patience, Patience and do not add any animals for that month and until you have tested. Secondly you should not have to dose unless you have a established tank with clams or SPS. Go to the beginners form and you will learn alot. Good luck, someday you will look back on this and laugh. biggrin.gif

that's annoying advice.

The back chambers hold about 2.5 gal of water. Id use a pump with a tube on the intake side and suck out everything on the bottom. you can keep filling it with fresh water if its working and keep sucking out the water.Once that doesnt work anymore, if theres still powder there, Id let it air dry for a few hours and then try a shop vac.

As far as dosing goes, your suppose to mix, depending on the suplement, around half a teaspoon into a full cup of fresh water. and then dispurse it around the whole tank or you can let it drip in the back if you want it to go in the back chambers.

As far as the spunge overflowing with both pumps on, nothing you can do about that. You should only run 1 pump at a time anyways so get get alternating current, dont run both because the tank cant keep up with the water going through there and your filter wont work properly.

Right now my tank has mushrooms and lots of polyps, zoas and ricordia. It has been stablished for about 5 months the only problem is the dusty particles. Should i remove the sponge and use floss? Is it ok to vaccum the back chamber as it is fool of dust and powder? Can i still do daily changes if i have fish and corals? Cani remove the spongees that run along the sides of the pumps?

thanks

just to be clear, I was talking about the LFS employee's advice, not anyone here smile.gif sorry for the confusion.

I would just siphon it out, but dont use your mouth to start the siphon
You can use one of those hand pumps to start it.

If you do use your mouth be very careful.

Since your tank is just zoa, paly, and ricordea i dont see a reason why you would need to add mag or calcium anyway. Just doing your weekly or bi-weekly water changes should be enough to keep everything in check.

Did you ever get your tank recovered from this incident?
