wats a good hang on refugium for a standard 20 g? i guess the right size is the medium one. i saw the cpr aquafuge that the pump is actually in the tank. is there and hob refugium that the pump is not in the tank. i would prefer that the pump is in the refugium. thanks for the help

In that case you might want to look at converting an aquaclear 110 into a refugium as the pump is located outside of the tank.

is it possible to put like a pump(maxi jet or something) inside the refugium to suck water from the display tank?

that's essentially how the Aquaclear operates, either way you will either have a pump in the tank, or an intake hose/tube in the tank. Up to you which is less of an eyesore.

If you don't want the pump in the tank, mod an aquaclear. You can't put a pump in a hang on back because it pumps water out, unlike an impellor which pulls water in. There may be some way to do it, but I don't have that info. I do have a large CPR aquafuge on my 55g and I like it a lot. Unlike the aquaclear, it is designed as a fuge and thus allows you to put a fairly deep sand bed in there. It also fits live rock, chaeto, and my heater. Stay away from brands that copy the CPR as the acrylic is not as thick and bows.

Papa, look up El Fab's DIY Aquaclear HOB fuge. Pretty easy to do.

CPR because very little modifications if any at all, and you can put a Tunze 9002 skimmer in. Make sure you check the measurement to get the right size, I got the medium for a JBJ 28 and it has alittle hang over on the side. I have LR and 1in sand bed with cheato that grows like no tomorrow, hermit crabs, astrea snails and thousands of pods. wink.gif

I'll see if I can post one. I have to find my usb cable first though!

just a tip - look for long and wide rather than deep.
tinyreefer
You can modify an external overflow box and put the pump in the back box. But that is a lot more work than its worth. I went to a CPR refugium and think its great. It allows for a nice deep sand bed and plenty of room for the Chaeto.

Mod an aquaclear 110. Cheap+efficient. Worked wonders for me, and it's cheap!

It's cheap if people already owns an AC 110. The new one is about $100 including shipping on Ebay.

A new CPR aquafuge Medium is about $140. It holds more water than an AC 110.

I would say go with a CPR if you don't have a aquaclear 110 already.

Well at bigalsonline.com the AC 110's right now on sale for $79 with free shipping for any order over $75, so that's almost half the price of the CPR. If price is a concern, I'd go with the AC. All you need are some shears and superglue gel to mod it. I've got one running as a fuge on my 40 BR and it's working well. I've even got a section for running carbon as necessary.

id go with the cpr aquafuge since it is designed to be a refugium plus it has space to do sand and stuff. I saw one at one of lfs and it looked pretty nifty. its definitely what Id do if I had a big tank.

I can't say I've tried this, but this would add a gallon and a half of volume

^This thing is really cool. I've had this one on my 20L for about 4-5 months and I have to say it was the best investment I have yet to make for this tank. The pump seems solid enough and even has a needle wheel impeller in it. The skimmer is no joke, it works very well with little tuning. Its pulls about 1/2 cup a day of the nice dark stinky skimate. Plenty of room to grow macro, I even stuck the heater in there... put a 20w CFL light on it, filled it with a little live sand, live lava rubble rock, some cheato and BOOM...copepod explosion. I like how the pods can grow and just drop right into the display without being chopped up by an impeller. Since Its been up and running Ive had alot less problems with algae and nitrates. The only other filtration is a small power filter for carbon. The downside is that in such a small tank if the power goes out it (could) drain down and make the display level too high. Plus use a little sealant when assembling the parts for a little insurance against leaks. I usually run the air nozzle wide open and just adjust the collection cup height. trim the chaeto every couple weeks and thats it! super simple. super nice. super cheap. I would have paid double for it. about to get that bigger one for my 55.

P.S. 1st post! new to this site but not new to the addiction I mean hobby.

That's good to hear, feel a little better about it now. Btw do you work for aquatraders? happy.gif

Anyways, welcome to NR.
Salt_Creep
haha no I dont work for aquatraders, im a boat captain, and I bought it on ebay. i havent heard of aquatraders till now, i'll check em out tho... and yes definately use sealant on this thing. I found a drip today, which is no good because this tank is on the second level. dont know how long its been like this but it explains why i topped off in the morning and then the level was lower than it should by this evening. I should've tightened it more but i was afraid to crack/strip the plastic. Maybe I did overtighten it. If you DO get it, try to get it to rest on the center support and the drain portion, I had it resting on the intake and it eventually cracked the tube. and living in maryland we just got slammed with snow and ice, no way to get to an open store for a new fitting for a while. got a bandaid on it right now, good thing for mighty putty, thank you billy mays. but it was MY FAULT still a decent product.
