Rockfish
so i'm starting a 20 high frag tank with an ac110 fuge, and a 96 watt t-5HO setup

my question.....b/c i dont have a sump....sand or no sand on the bottom???

come on guys!!! lets hear all those conflicting arguments!! tongue.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
Scott Riemer
I like the look of sand, just not a deep sand bed.
DHaut
1" or so of sand.
Scott Riemer
Why's this in aquaculture?
DHaut
Scott to the rescue!
Urchinhead
Frag tank. No sand. Its just going to give you more trouble than its worth. Paint the bottom (dry side) white to get a good reflection on the lights as if it were a white sand bed.

Add some macro algae if you must but since its a frag tank you shouldn't have that high a bioload.
Scott Riemer
Sorry, moved back to aquaculture, missed frag tank part. No sand in frag tank.
Lawnman
No sand.
Rockfish
and particular reason?

yeah i think any tank you have that purpose is utilitarian rather than aesthetic should be bare bottom. You want to be able to get in there and work, and not worry about sand storms and what not.

Sand will severely limit your flow and maintenance options in a frag tank, and wouldn't really serve much of a useful purpose in there.

how would a 1 inch bed of sand limit flow???

that doesn't make much sense

Ok, then put in a 1" sand bed and put in the turbulent flow necessary to make SPS and zoanthids growing at farmable rates and keep me posted on how well that works out for you. Don't forget to get some backup powerheads for when the sand storm tears up your impellers...

I said that it would limit your flow options by the way, not flow. Not sure why you're so insistent on needing to keep a sand bed in your frag tank, but if you don't like the answers you're getting it's not our fault for giving them.

I think organism just voted for "no sand" rant01.gif

I'm definitely a douche, albeit a smartass one, but come on man, this thread reads like this

"should I put a sandbed in my frag tank"

"nope, not a good idea"

"why?"

"it's messy and not good for frag tanks"

"why?"

"because it's more for aesthetics and not really practical for a frag tank"

"why?"

"because it really limits your flow options"

"but whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?"

"because it will destroy your powerheads and your corals won't grow fast, stop asking already"

"you're a douche"

"I sure am"

i'm simply stating that i've seen both very successful frag tank with and without sand......just wanted to hear different opinions......knot smart ass remarks from know it alls......thanks for your time
dtfleming
Well, that "know it all" owned fragglereef.com til he sold it. So I would say that he's pretty knowledgable on the subject.

I've had various frag tanks and frag tubs from time to time. And pretty much ran all BB.
