First of all: Thanks to all of you for making me laugh so hard I had tears coming down my face on page 3. The rest of the pages are just making me feel nostalgic. I am an old monkey by the first 5 and most of the second 5 definitions. I am a 70 birth year myself.

Can I join?
* I have Metamucil, Aspercream and Preperation H in my medicine cabinet, and have to use all three.
* My first fish tank had a metal frame and a slate bottom. The glass was held in place with glaziers putty (you had to re-do the putty every 2-3 years)
* My first Reef was in 92'.
* Charlies Angel's and the Incredible Hulk (with Lou Ferrigno) were amoung my favorite shows, as well as MASH, Star Trek and All In The Family.
* I had a Coleco Football handheld game ( old timers will know what I am talking about).
* My Dad and I built our first computer from a kit. It was a Heathkit H-89.
* I used to have to go outside and spin my antenna by hand to pick up the UHF channel that Star Trek came on Saturday nights (Sometimes when it was windy I had to stay out there and hold the damn thing for the whole show so my Dad could watch).
* Dirt Clods, Sticks and Rocks were considered toys.

Break 19, Break 19, This heres the rubber ducky. I need a License to be on this here CB. Oh, our first computer was a VIC 20, followed by a Commadore 64. TRS-80's were popular although I never had a trash 80 myself.

I know you all remember Leave it to Beaver and The Waltons, Good night John Boy, Good night Sue Ellen!

Does everyone remember when you could actually play cops and robbers at school and pretend to shoot someone, try it now and see what happens.

We had an apple IIe computer in my High School, but not until my senior year. We still used another computer that saved data on a cassette recorder.

Every program had to be run from a floppy disc every time because there was no hard drive. We learned to program in BASIC.

Kristy McNichol was hot.
Scott Riemer
I took the very first "computer" class offered at my school. Our final project was to write a program in BASIC for our TRS-80's. My program resembled Space Invaders.

What you sayin? I'm old. Look at the join date then the post count. Crazy low aint it.

Man you guys have dug deep for some of these memories. But when did sticks, rocks, and dirt stop being toys?

Professor I STILL have to use the aerial rotor to adjust the tv at our farm. I get this "sit down now" 4 channels. On a really humid day or if its raining I almost get 6.5 channels. I so had one of those old slate bottom aquariums as well.

Pre computer days who on here built their first CB radio out of a kit from radio shack? Funny thing is I still use this very same radio in my snow plow truck. I have updated the crystals in it but......smile.gif

I remember sitting up the pre CNC style macnines with data punched tab rolls. Man what an unreliable system that was.

So speaking of old ppl stuff....
My 6 yo son was shocked the other day when I told him I didn't have cable t.v. when I was a kid.
In fact, we didn't even get a t.v. til I was around 10 yrs old or so, and even then it was a 13" b&w set.
He was also shocked to hear that cell phones, CD's and DVD's weren't around when I was a kid, and while they did exist, I didn't have any "video games" either.
He wanted to know what the heck we did.
I told him we played outside a lot.

Damn I love this thread, every time I read more I am laughing. I agree, kick him out and give him a ball. I do it to my kids all the time. My response to them: GET OUT!!!! Get your cleats on and get out. I would tell them to take a ball with them but they leave them outside.

Remember the good old tube TVs? My Dad was a TV repairman when I was a kid and my Grandfather owned the TV Store in town, everyone laughed at him when he started selling Sony stuff, back then Japanese equipment was considered the "cheap stuff"...if only he had bought some stock!
Deep Thief
Thats no joke, I remember when my Dad bought the family a Christmas present in 1979, a Sony Trinitron TV that was still in use up to a year ago at my brothers.
jestersix
My Grandfather gave me a little B&W Sony after working for him one summer in the late 60s...it finally gave up the ghost last year! I used to watch it in the guest room - kids thought I was crazy to watch B&W...still like it better sometimes. Grandpa sold a ton of Trinitrons...they were the big seller for years.

I don't remember what brand the family B&W was, but when it came time to take the big step to a Color set Dad went with Sylvania.....It was probably the cheapest one available, knowing my Dad.....

Okay so yall talkin about TV. I remember when we got our first VHS player. We were poor so we didnt get the 1st generation ones with the wired remote, but we waited and got a later one with a regular IR remote. Man did we think we were in high cotton. We could set the TV on channel 4 then use the VCR's remote to change between the 4 channels. Man those were the days. We toggled through the exhausting amt of tv selections. Nothing was on. So we went out and really played. Who use to stick playing cards in the spokes of their bike?
Scott Riemer
Here's a memory. Mom and Dad just bought the first microwave for the family, no buttons, just a dial. Dad and Uncle Ed go to Arby's and buy the family sandwiches. Dad decides to warm the sandwiches in the new microwave. Nobody told Dad you couldn't put metal in the microwave. Arby's sandwiches come wrapped in a wrapper that has aluminum foil in them. New microwave catches fire. Good times. laugh.gif
Scott Riemer

Guess you had to be there......

My mom did the same thing when Arbys use to have metal wrappers. My dad was P.O and was screaming and yelling that Microwave was 59 dollars and you ruined it LMAO.

That makes me laugh. My genius father insisted our first VCR be a Beta, cause it was going to be the "wave of the future"! His rational was the Beta tapes were smaller then VHS, therefore cheaper to produce so they would catch on. In retrospect I am glad he never played in the stock market or we would have been paupers.

And yes, I put playing cards in my spokes. We also used to cannibilize from broken bikes, big wheels and skate boards and make some kick ass go carts ( they kind that used gravity). We did make one that used a lawnmower engine which was great until the neighbor down the street called the cops on us for stealing the engine off his lawnmower!

Prof's list is closest for me.

No video, old school pin ball- no digital display either.....odometer style score keepin'

No cassettes, 8 tracks and - imagine this- having to "wait" for the "good" song to come around. Later you would find a song on another track to listen to before switching back to the good song- then listen to those two like thirty times in a row.

Baseball in the street, at the intersection with each corner being a base. ( wiffle ball actually lol )
Football in the street also.

Chasing the mosquito sprayer on your bike- inhaling God knows what for blocks and blocks. rolleyes.gif

Getting home before the street lights come on or suffer a royal arse beatin'

Hitchin'- AKA grabbing the rear bumper of a passing car on a snow / ice covered road and hanging on as long as you could before it likely deposited you under a nearby parked car.

Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, MASH ... not to mention all those Christmas specials we got to see ONCE. If you missed it, tough luck. Better luck next year.

Scott, I too snapped the forks off my Huffy. Right at the gooseneck. Boy, that left a mark. tongue.gif

So, Old Monkey? Yup. wink.gif

Good grief, 8 track tapes were the worst! If they could make it fast forward and flip sides, why the hell couldn't they make it rewind? I think I still have a Led Zeppelin and a Queen 8 track tape laying around the house somewhere. I might even still have a Jim Croce one too.

I remember in the summer we had to do our chores and then you were kicked outside until dinner time. You drank out of the garden hose all day long and got to eat a sandwich on the porch for lunch. Most of us had to strip down to our skivvies outside before being allowed back in at night because we were so filthy. And speaking of filthy, does anyone remember Lava Soap?

Funny enough, hand sanitizer back then was called soap and we did not have H1N1 virus, Bird Flu, Mad Cow disease or any of the other wacky crap that is floating around now. Weird, huh?

I also remember doing bomb drills in school in case of a nuclear attack. "All right kids, if we are attacked and the warning alarm goes off, everybody climb underneath your desk - it will save your life" We respected teachers back then and actually believed that flimsy 1" thick piece of formica crap was going to save us from an atomic bomb!

I still have scars from Lava soap. They still make it, I use it after I do oil changes on my car. Usually you find it by the laundry soaps.

My grandparent's Zenith console TV just died last year. They would still be using it, but they can't buy the tubes anymore, so the repair shop couldn't do it anymore.

I rode my bike around town, had to be home by the time the street lights came on, had dirt bomb wars, crab apple wars, and put pennies on the railroad tracks.

We got an Intellivision console for Christmas one year, and it usually collected dust, unless it was a lightning storm or was too cold (usually below zero was the cut off).

I remember when your news came on your doorstep a day late. I Iiked it that way. Our society suffers form information overload. I wish there was a way to easily unplug.

My first computer was a TI-90 followed by a C64 (I had the cassette player to load programs that took a minimum of 30 minutes)

Sunday, Monday, Happy Days! biggrin.gif

LOL, Needreefunds and Prof, we must be about the same age. Certain differences, I was a city kid. No baseball. Stickball (played with the stolen mop handle from whoever's mom wasn't home or paying attention), stoopball, paddle ball. No one played soccer, or knew anyone who did. Little League was boys only.

I have clear memories of listening to Band on the Run on 8 track.

It never occurred to me that my parents might entertain me, nor did we have playdates. You were given the borders of which streets you could cross, and which were your turn back point. You went home when you heard your mother calling--and you could distinguish your mother's voice from anyone else's within a ten block radius. Sometimes mom got together with her friends and you played with those kids, but that was as close as it got.

Everyone smoked, everywhere. It would NEVER have occured to any kid to complain or comment about an adult smoking. Going into the teacher's lounge on an errand was an exotic adventure; the smoke was so thick you weren't quite sure of the boundaries of the room.

Summer was the beach, summer evenings were for sitting with the tweezers to take boardwalk splinters out of your feet. If you were too young to go to the beach, someone's mom might rig a hose through the backyard basketball hoop, which you stood under and considered sprinklers. If it was close to dinner time, a bar of Ivory and bottle of shampoo would get tossed down from a window.

If the weather was bad, you played in someone's basement until you heard "Yous kids better shut the hell up in there" for the third time. Then it was time to go. Quickly.

Hey by the way, how did mom deal with not knowing EXACTLY where we were at all times?

No cell phone.....no text messaging.....how did we survive?

Anne reminded me of other things. Definitely heard your mothers voice, if not a friend did and told you your moms calling you! HURRY!!!

You LISTENED to mom and dad- ANYONE's mom and dad!

13 and buying smokes and hiding them from my parents ...ugh. They must have smelled the smoke, no? tongue.gif

Running through the sprinkler lol.
We made a game out of almost anything didn't we?
Never dared to ask for a ride anywhere either.
