I am looking a few for interesting fish to plan a 29 gallon standard sized tank. Colors and interesting swima ctivity are keys to my choice. I'm thinking a Yellow Wrasse b/c of their constant swimming and motion is a good choice - and probably a clown to swim around the front of tank - and wondering if a Longnose Hawkfish would fit in that aquarium setup well?

* Do they swim around alot?
* How are they with other fish
* Do they bother your shrimp? ( Thinking a cleaner shrimp would be a good tankmate )
* Any problems with snails or other fish that these harrass - and are they visible quite a bit in the tank.
* Are they difficult to feed?
* Any reservations to adding a Longnose Hawkfish that I should be aware of?

I'll have some Live Rock - Sump and corals ( will work on these selectiosn later )

Thanks

Just in my own experience of owning one for about 3 years:

No, they don't swim very much. They purch on rock and stuff in your tank (Still very awesome to watch though)

Mine was really good with the other fish

Never bothered my shrimp, but I never had small shrimp, only a larger sized cleaner shrimp and peppermint shrimp.. as long as the hawkfish is fed well they should be ok.

No problems with snails and stuff that I was ever aware of... again, just make sure they are well fed and don't have to "hunt" for food...

Very visible in the tank because of the bright red on them. Neat fish... was actually one of my fav's

Easy to feed.. I use to feed frozen mysid, as well as some dried krill pieces and flake. He ate all of it.

Nothing else special I really know of other than some room to swim. Mine started at about 2 inches and made it up to about 7" in no time... largest fish in my tank.

the longnose hawk is slow, percher like friend said, but, however it is soo doscile that IME they get picked on in the wrong company. My six-line killed my longnose hawk sad.gif

Now, the flame hawk is xtemely entertaining and there are others that are more confident than the longnose

I have had pretty much the same experience as everyone else. My longnose just stays perched on my Koralia powerhead most of the time. Not much of a swimmer except when its feeding time. Neat little fish cause he seems to stare at me when he is perched. I have him with a whipfin fairy wrasse and a blackcap basslet and he just keeps to himself. Has never bothered any of my shrimp, snails, or crabs.

I've had a longnose hawkfish in the past

The fish with the most personality IMO

Would follow me from one side of the tank to the other. He did just sit there most of the time but always active when I came up close in front of the tank. I would also feed him very small feeder guppies, about every couple of days. Once he gets use to it, he would come charging from across the tank and nail the little guppy at full speed, very kewl.

He was also the police of the tank. If other fish were picking on each other he would ram the more aggressive one with that longnose. That usually stopped the aggression LOL.

Biggest issue is they like to live on the beach and will attempt carpet surfing if you have an open top biggrin.gif

Other then that they are basically reef safe.
