Full Version: Flame Angel, bad idea?

I am setting up a nano cube that is 16x16x14 (15gal), the plan is to have minimal live rock and lots of open swimming space. I have been having troubles deciding on what to keep in the tank, but thought it could be cool to have JUST a flame angel. I know the tank is on the smaller side for keeping them, but do you think it is too small? Granted it might not be the best idea with corals, but I'd be willing to give it a chance I think.

Opinions?

I'd say no. But thats just my opinion...

They prefer lots of live rock and lots of swimming room. 15 gallons isn't enough swimming room even with no LR. Sure you could QT one in that tank, but not keep one healthy long term.

I've got to agree with these guys. I'm sorry, they are very cool fish, but that's just not enough room for a dwarf angel.

ok, thanks for the opinions, guess we'll hold off on that. Any recommendations on something unique for the 15g?

Well I am going to the bad fish keeper. I have a coral beauty in my 12 gallon. Yes call the tang police. He is doing great, I got him as a freebie from the LFS because he was getting beat to crap by other fish. He is been in there for 5 months now and has fattened up, has not touched a coral and is nice to the other fish in the tank.

Maybe I am lucky but it's been great.

its not about luck its about not being cruel to your fish. the reason a minimum tank size for them is 30G is because they need that much room. maybe he is really tiny now and it seems ok but they still do get big. they are dwarf angels because they dont get as big as other angels but other angels get really big. i think you should get rid of the angel and give it to someone who can keep it in a bigger tank.

I do not see how it is being cruel at all. He seems happy as a clam. If he outgrows the tank and have issues swimming around I will find him a bigger home. He's yet to grow any I can tell since he was given to me. But again I am a very bad fish keeper.

I am pretty sure him not growing is a sign of stunting... And maybe you can keep him in your tank, but it will not be "happy"... It might make you happy, but there are other fish that I would prefer... I can't imagine a reef tank without a pair of clownfish, and a yasha goby or jawfish most likely have more personality than a flame angel...

I had a bluespot jaw in a 20L and felt sorry for him, he wanted more room, more rock and more sand. Ill hold judgement just share my experience. I have a Tiger jaw now in a 55 and dont feel sorry for him smile.gif I guess its just you, do what you feel.
